Ok I decided to jump on an eBay item, the Audio Technica A700 headphones. Due to the closed back, it's supposed to produce more bass than the open back AD700. It's above my budget for those.

Definantly agree that Beyer Dynamic DT770 pro80s are Bass machines, own a pair, haven't put them down since I got them...
there is also the option of the ATH A700s/900s which are very bassy... but what is your budget?

I have the ad700's(open ones) and they have very nice clean bass. I bet that you will like the closed A700's because the bass will just be louder. I use foobar for my media player with audio creation mode in bit matched playback. Normally the bass is lacking like that in my cans but I just adjusted the equalizer in foobar and it sounds perfect to me now. Here are my settings so remember if you aren't happy at first with the A700's all you have to do is mess with the equalizer.
It also helps to keep the volume in foobar low and the overall sound card volume higher.

I have read that these and the AD700 are good enough to here the imperfections in low-quality MP3 songs. Does bit-matched playback help with this or make it worse?

I would also add the Equation Audio RP-22x to the shortlist. Think of them as a poor-man's DT770. The RP-21 is more tame (not as boomy) but still is a very capable bass headphone (with decent midrange and treble, too). I greatly prefer the RP-21 to the HD280.
Don't get all caught up in specs - you probably can't practically hear much below 30hz and there is very little musical content in that spectrum anyways, so shopping purely on frequency response is not the best idea. Most of the headphones mentioned so far are going to be good enough for you to hear a difference between "bad" mp3s and "good" mp3s or lossless recordings. Bit perfect just bypasses any sound processing that might be taking place so you know the output from your card is identical to what is on your hard drive.

bit matched playback plays it identically as it was recorded, bit for bit, no alterations.. (except software distortions, ie. kernel, eqs, bass boosts etc.)
