Already did. I picked up the Audio technica A700s off of eBay brand new for $123 shipped.

im afraid you're gonna be disappointed. i owned the same cans and disliked them. i like deep, warm, dark and punching bass. the a700's don't have this. they have clean bass, but it's not warm by anymeans. i sold mine after 3 months of owning them. i was very disappointed in them, including the build quality.

sorry, i'm just telling you like it is. did you want clean bass? or deep thumping bass?

Great. The review sites I was looking at must not have noticed. I prefer deep thump rather than "clean bass". Well, it's too late now, I will just have to sell them lol good thing I paid only $123 shipped for them. I may be able to make a profit, since they are brand new in box.

Ok are there any phones that have the deep thump, without wobbly distortion, but at the same price as these?

You guys also need to remember, the HD280 Pro headphones are the ONLY decent headphones I have ever owned. Before that I only had $20 headphones. They pale in comparison to the HD280 Pro, but as for anything that may be better bass-wise, I have no basis for comparison. The A700's may be worlds better than the HD280 Pro for all I know.

look for some DT770 pro 80s... they're around the $150 mark on ebay... I think they fit the bill for what you're looking for...

Or RP-22x if you'd rather spend less/buy new.

Who knows, you may love them. Personally, from what I've read, they sounded amazing too. They were excellent for gaming, but that's about it. I've heard the HD280's and those to me have tighter, cleaner bass, more analytical if anything. Sorry, well, always burn them in first than see if you still like them. If not, just head over to head-fi or back to e-bay.

As for "the same price" the only thing I'd recommend are those DT's on ebay. Ask namrac, he's tried some ATH's and I'm pretty sure he feels the same way about ATH's as I do.

IMO, the A700s don't do anything particularly well... bass, mids, treble, all were very meh. Not bad, but not great. Of course, I felt the same way about the HD280, so maybe you'll like them better.

The ideal bass you are looking for can definitely be found in a few particular headphones, but they are all quite expensive (I'm talking 4-digits for a couple of them).

Considering what your point of reference has been thus far, I would give the A700 a chance and spend at least a few weeks with them. Despite how others feel about them, you ought to at least gain a sense of what they sound like and decide whether or not they are satisfactory for you. The risk you take obviously is losing $20-30 by opening up the box and having to sell them as used if you don't care for them.

Good luck, hope it turns out well .

Well to be honest, after reading reviews that peg the DT770's as being warm and heavy on the bass, they may not be good for me. I want good clear highs as well, without them being drowned out by bass, but I definitely want bass to be present. The HD280 Pros has decent highs, but there have been times where I wished they were higher. I think the A700's will after all be a good fit for me. Besides, I have never tried those headphone amplifier things before, so maybe I can give one a try and it might help with bringing out the bass a little more (?)

a headphone amp can defiantly bring out certain features of a headphone... I'd suggest getting a nice desktop amp setup... even something cheap and simple as a Millet Max straving student edition as Chipp built...
