Carlos Slim has officially killed CompUSA. Oh, thanks for ruining one of my favorite stores. I will never forget you, CompUSA. Newegg.com is now my PRIMARY source for computer parts.

the a700 (along with most audio technica hi end stuff) will do bass well if u eq it in and feed it enough power. i worked my way through most of them and have settled lovingly on the a900 recently. the a900 prompted me to sell my dt770. i love the bass but i need detail also to keep me happy

Thats what I'm running (the skullcrushers) and I love them - easy on the budget and sound darn good to me.

I've no experience with "high quality/high dollar" headphones though.

I went to Guitar Center today with my wife and they had a pair of DT 770 Pro's. Comfy as hell, nice soundstage, but holy crap they bottomed out really easily. Apparently their power limit is only 100mW, with a 96 dB limit. The limits it has definitely showed when the audio guy plugged them into the big gigantic setup he had there for running all kinds of stuff on (DJ stuff, gigantic speakers, etc) and when played some Korn and Disturbed songs from his CDs, with a good amount of volume and power, they bottomed out right away. Maybe he was feeding them too much power? I had him plug in a pair of the Senn HD280 Pros and it didn't bottom out until the music was so loud that it was painful for me to hear, and the specs suggest such (500mW vs 100mW, 113 dB limit vs 96 dB). Maybe that pair of DT770 Pro was worn out or old? Maybe they were busted?

Sounds like they were busted. I owned 2 versions of the DT770 (80 ohm and 600 ohm), and spent a lot of time with the 250 ohm version, and all went down incredibly low, big booming bass that had no limit.
