As above, what should i be setting my ingame settings to?

(headphones, 2.1 etc)

and what should i be setting my xfi console settings to?

for best positional sound audio!

If your using a headset make sure to set it to such.

For the most part, settings don't do much, just get it set up so you have the left/right speakers configured correctly, as in, it recognizes there are 2 speakers only. 1 left. 1 right.

The real advantage in CS:S will come from cranking the volume. Unfortunately my ears bleed after a while, but when i really crank it, i can hear from T spawn CT's coming from front office if it's 1v1!

It hurts to shoot hahaha.

Experiment with what your ear can tolerate.

I use to have Xfi and it does make a small difference. IF you have 5.1 surround setup ..... maybe 2 speakers too but not 100%

just for future reference as I know you're fairly new here, you're only alowed to bump a thread once every 24 hours...

but to answer your question, depending on the headphones/headset, it may be beneficial to place the setting to 2.1 speaker setup, I myself use 2.1 as boosts the bass, which my DT770 pro 80s are amazing at so bass is awesome, and making your ears bleed isn't the smartest idea, just have it loud enough so that you can hear footsteps behind you...
