You know, I had a crazy idea. I have this older 550w 2ch receiver. If I ran my audio (via composite) through the receiver from my video card (sig rig below), would this help at all? It's got one monster of an amplifier. It has blows out every speaker I have hooked up to it lol really powerful. Reason I ask before doing so, is this thing is hella heavy and I would have to find a place to put it on my desk.

Nvm I just confirmed it for myself. I plugged in my failing Sennheisers and turned on the radio on that receiver... omg wow with the amp turned on, it has SERIOUS power even through the phones. I can also control the mids, highs, and bass. It also has a couple of buttons to cancel out either the highs or lows, and then it has a tone defeat button to give it a completely flat EQ. Wow Im glad I dug this thing out of my closet.

What I did is run a 3.5mm (from my front I/O panel) to composite adapter to the Aux inputs in the back, and my headphones are plugged into the jack on the receiver. With the amp turned on, christ, it's almost TOO much and I had to turn down some things to get clear highs.

I never really wanted something portable, so this will do fine. I'm a noob running a noob audio setup, but it sounds amazing so I'm happy.

Oh, and uh excuse me but why am I hearing things in these Disturbed songs that I never heard before? Does the amp amplify EVERYTHING in the music? I thought it just did the bass.

Either way, this 1975 Fisher receiver is mighty nice for amplifying headphones. I dare NOT ever hook speakers up to it again because of its power, but headphones seem to do great.

An amp amplifies the entire signal, gives the headphone more power. Same as with a speaker amp.

Yeah I've noticed some serious power through the headphones. I have also come to realize how limiting the HD280s are. The bass bottoms out on them when amplified, if I'm not careful with the bass levels. I hope the A700's can handle this. Although it may be the fault of using too powerful of an amplified receiver.

It's an old 1975 Fisher receiver. 2 channel, 550 watts. It has the option of turning the extra amplification on or off.

Here's some pics:

Why don't you try making your own cmoy? There are guides on how to make a basic one and then from there, you can buy parts and tweak it how you see fit
