I would install from the Downloaded versions as they tend to be newer than what is on the CD. However saying that to get all the consoles I think you will need to install from the disk first and then install the downloaded drivers as they will update the others installed from the disk if needs be.
So what im saying is, Install from Disk and then Update.

When it comes to drivers, I always try to use the latest from the website. What I did with my X-Fi was download the drivers and installed them. Then inserted the driver disk and selected custom install. I then made sure to uncheck "X-Fi Drivers" from the list of installation files. That way you get the other functions of the card you dont get with just the website drivers, while also having the latest drivers installed.

Note: make sure not to install the alchemy drivers from the disk if you already downloaded and installed them from the website.

Thats all you need really. Only need alchemy with Vista though. XP has hardware layer support and does not need Alchemy.

If you don't install off the CD you can also download the console launcher which is better than the generic ones that come with the x-fi drivers.

You need to go into your BIOS and disable Onboard Audio before installing the X-fi. You also need to remove any previous sound drivers from Windows before Installing X-FI drivers.
