suggestions:
-look for the latest drivers from your motherboard manufacturer's site -make sure your headphones are plugged firmly into the correct jack on the sound card/onboard (green one) - make sure that your Computer recognizes on board as your main audio output device - be sure that the main Windows volumes are not muted, and are at a decent level...

the onboard sound isnt great on this mobo and be quieter than a sound blaster card. i had this problem with onboard sound before where i installed vista sound drivers, but when my pc restarts windows reinstalls their drivers and they dont work at all. I cannot remember how i fixed this though, i know it was something simple
