I've been asked by a band to record and attempt to produce a demo of a band. As you can see by my system specs, I need a better sound card.
They have mics, a mixing board, guitar amps, all that, I just need to be able to record them, preferrably multi-track for easier production, but to be honest I'm a complete n00b at this. Any recommendations? I've looked at the ASUS Xonar DX and M-Audio 1010LE. Budget = ~$150 Whatever interfaces are recommended, I'd highly prefer them to be Linux-compatible.

I have an old Sound blaster Audigy 2 zs platinum that i hook up for recording for the same purpose. Remember that you are recording in stereo and you dont need the latest and greatest surround gaming card. Its how you set up your equipment and the software used and how you process the track that will determine the quality of your track. The audigy has a 5 1/4 bay slot with many i/o's that you can hook up all kinds of stuff. It comes with cubase software (or you can use others if you like) which will let you do what you are looking for. So ^bay a cheap used one and save your self some cash.

I was hoping to make this somewhat professional and be able to record, say, 6 mics on seperate tracks for the drums alone. Talking to a friend in Hong Kong that works for a company that sets up concerts recommended this to me, said it makes tweaking much easier.
Rep+ for suggestion, keep 'em comin'!

There is no cheap way but I would suggest to look into some m-audio interface. As far as Multitracking, you need to have many I/O and a decent mixer. You will also need some form of software i.e. protools, sonic producer etc to be able to track in and mix down. WHen recording drums it would serve you better to record separate to have control or each piece. You can search sites like daddy junky music store, guitar center as they have some good on-line deals.

For software, I've got Ardour and many others.
Rep+, I'll likely get the M-Audio 1010LE. Any more suggestions?

What about microphones? What do you have for microphones?

They have 2 mics that they paid lots of money for, and 4 that are of less quality. I know nothing more about them.
They also have a fairly high-end but aging mixing board. I noticed some mention in the above posts about recording in stereo. Would I be able to have a decent outcome by using the mixer, recording in stereo, and tweaking the mixed audio? It just sounds like it'd be easier to have all the mics as separate tracks for that. If you peoples think it'd be possible to end up with a decent outcome with that method, I'll save some cash on the sound card by getting the Xonar and pick up a better set of studio headphones.

Well dude, I gave it some thought, and I am going to advise you against taking on this project. I don't want to sound negative, but it is WAY more of an undertaking than you can imagine. In order for this to work, yon would need to buy the delta 1010, at least 15 cables, and you would have to hit the books HARD on learning the basics. Its not as easy as it sounds. Recording is not about the gear. It is about what you can do with it. For instance, I would pick a studio with a knowledgeable staff way before the studio with all the expensive gear and mediocre staff.
That being said, if you are still motivated to take on the challenge, I will give you all the tips you can handle, and some interesting things to read on the webz. PM me if you are interested. Good luck!!!
