Question MOBO sound or PCI sound

Hey all,

I was wondering, does it make such a big difference wether you use the onboard sound or use a seperate PCI sound card?

If it is dependant on what you are doing, I have a scenario. I will be purchasing the logitech z-5500 speaker set in a couple of days, and I want to make use of the optical/digital (can't remember which one it is) feature. In this case what brand of PCI sound card do you recommend and if there are better speaker sets than these (which I'm sure there are probably) then please advise on those as well.

Thank you.

it will all depend on the pci sound card you buy.

the Asus Xonar D2X looks to be a powerful sound card. I will probably consider buying this one. O and by the way, this card doesn't happen to have sound issues with vista, right? Thanks steve!

Pretty much any sound card is going to be better than onboard sound.

Either the Asus Xonar D2X or any of the Creative X-Fi Titanium cards.

I've read some comments that the a lot of the creative cards have vista issues though.

It's user error

I've had zero problems with my XtremeMusic with Vista and with Creative's own drivers (not DanielK's).

No, it use to be creative error. Took them forever to get off their butts and actually do something about it.

Everything should work fine now.

I have had nothing but love for my card. I use Vista 64 and have had no issues other than having to dig around for the console launcher. (thats also due to me buying an oem card) It is a great upgrade from onboard sound.
