I have a pair of HD-555's, which I love. right now they are doing double duty between home and work and I am frequently without cans one place or the other. First thought is to get a pair for gaming only, as sound quality takes a bit of a back seat to being able to place my enemies.
I saw the excellent thread on gaming headphones (thanks phospholipid), but I couldn't really figure out what are the best for soundstaging (is that right? i'm new... ) at all costs. so criteria: - Place Sounds!!!!!!!! #1 priority - cost, ~$30-50 - over ear preferred, open vs. closed doesn't matter just sound placement (open if I understand correctly) - comfort, as long as they aren't super uncomfortable I should be ok, except hot is bad) -I will be using on my sig rig - X-Fi sound card. - I don't need a mic, already have one. If it turns out that the 555's are pretty much top, I could always get a reasonably priced pair of all around music can's - HD202 or 201's sound reasonable. Thanks for any help!! personal experience appreciated! ![]() EDIT: Went with suggested JVC HA-RX700 (poor mans AT A700...). Recommendations in linked post

HD 555s are definantly a very well balanced set of headphones, i owned and used them for a year or so and then traded up to the HD650s (my new favourites
) and even though they are roughly twice what you want to spend,I suggest investing in them. Although the cheaper Senn offerings are pretty good from what I hear aswell either way, you'll enjoy them I'm sure. The 555s have a great soundstage with accurate stereo representation, and I used them for CSS all the time now I generally use my DT770/80s or my HD650s.. both really good.

I would go with the HD201's, I love my set and frequently game with them as well as my zune. They are amazing for the money and can be found for $20 on amazon.
If you are looking for more bass I would go with the HD202's though, they have more bass but the highs aren't as pronounced but if you are gaming it doesn't really matter

thanks for the replies guys. Any thoughts on some "gaming" headphones. I have been looking around and these three have had favorable responses
-Everglide S500 (found for ~$50) -Icemat Siberia (also ~$50, these look comfy) -Steelseries 5Hv2 (more expensive ~$75, plus has a mic I don't need) thanks again for any input

i have had all 3 of those. everglides are 'meh'- can give big sound but not great quality sound. icemats are horrible sounding. some peeps find them uncomfortable, some love them. the 5hv2 has nice sound but no bass. its little brother-the 4h- has better sound. (30@newegg)
for your budget get the jvc harx700 (38$ at buy.com) -sounds like an audio technica a series can-huge sound, blows away the hd555 (i've had these too) for gaming Last edited by ourfpshero : 11-06-08 at 08:02 PM. |

I own the JVC Harx700's and they're awesome. I'd definitely recommend getting a pair. Although I've never owned the hd555's so I'm unable to compare the sound quality of the two.

DT770's have great bass response for those amazing explosions.
Great gaming cans but they really shine with an amp.

thanks for the info/ suggestions you guys, +rep. It looked like my HD-555's would be narrowly beat by ad700's, and from there the next step would be something with an amp like the suggested dt770's or 880's, or akg 601/701's. All flying out of my price range :'(. So I decided to stick with my 555's for gaming and get the HA-RX700. Supposedly good all around, I will just use whichever I like better for gaming and for music.
Reading about them I can't wait. Too bad they can't be AD-mimic's instead of A... From what I understand open is more desirable from soundstage considerations. Thanks again, btw found them at Audio-Discounters as Buy.com and many others where sold out.

The Steelseries H5v2 are good, but they really echo a lot. It sounds like you are in a tile bathroom or something. I much perfer the Steelseries Serberia neckband headset, which is much better.

uh that would be bad sounding. you dont want the "sounding like its in a enclosed space" sound you want natural and the audiophile phones will give you that natural sound a lot better. and plus some are even cheaper.
