Default Good headphones for FPS games?

I'm looking for a good set of circumaural (around-ear) headphones for ~$75. I'd be willing to go higher on price if need be. Any good ideas on what to get?

I'll be picking up Left 4 Dead, where headphones seem rather important. I also play CS:S, COD4, and other FPS games.

I'd also like a microphone. Should I get headphones with a mic, or a separate mic?

Thanks

Well I use these for gaming and music. The directional sound is amazing and they are extremely comfortable.

And most people buy the Zalman mic:

Thanks.

What are the distinguishable differences between "open-air" and "closed" headphones?

Sorry, I'm kinda new to this stuff.

I was windering the same thing. check the recommendations I received here, and pospholipids thread here.

I ended up with the JVC HA-rx700 to augment my Sen HD-555's. We will see which works out better.
It sounds like having open headphones are better for getting a sense of depth and environment to place enemies.

as far as mic go, I recommend a clip on zalman, as the sound quality is better for both mic and headphones, also cheaper total and easier to replace.

Have a look here http://www.overclock.net/sound-cards...-headsets.html

Edit: Marin's advice is spot on, the AD700 are great headphones

I was looking for that thread for the last 10 minutes But thanks for agreeing.

Anyways, to quote the part he needs to see:

Quote:
Do you prefer open backed, or closed backed headphones?
This is also VERY IMPORTANT. Open backed and closed back both have their pros and cons. The benefit of open backed headphones is the soundstaging. With most headphones you can hear footsteps and which direction they're coming from, but with opened back headphones you can hear to which degree of an angle when the sound is coming from [well, practically]. Down side, Open backed cans are very "impersonal". That means, people will be able to hear the explosions and sounds and music, pretty clearly. Also, this mean sound leaks IN. If you're gaming in the living room and your mom/roommate is vacuuming the house, you're gonna hear it.

As for closed backed headphones
, they tend to be dynamic, more boom, and can range from normal isolation to EXTREME isolation. Sound doesn't leak in as much, and leaks out practically null. Theres no real"downside" to owning closed back headphones, just the level of sound staging is usually 3/4ths that AVAILABLE from open backed headphones. Also, closed back headphones tend to get MUCH warmer MUCH faster than open backed, especially after hours of long gaming.

I have no problems with my AKG K81DJ...imaging is fairly decent and they fold up . Mic wise, just pick up a cheap desktop mic from Staples...I have a Labtec and it's decent.

for around 90-100 on amazon you can grab some AD700, I used to own a pair. They worked great for FPS gaming and other games I used them with. They have a wide sound stage.

Tho they lack as much bass as there closed vers, but they make up for it with there sound stage. Also there big they may fall off your head depending on the size of your head.
