Default Help Me Choose a Sound Card

I plan on getting new speakers and everyone always talks about how good sound cards sound and how much better they are than onboard sound
So i'm looking for a sound card.
I'm not willing to spend alot at all just really to try a sound card. I game and listen to music 24/7
any suggestions?
Thanks
EDIT: i have xp

You're not gonna find much difference between onboard sound and a 20-50 dollar card...

just my .02 cents

Since you are running XP, I would go with a Creative X-Fi ExtremeGamer or ExtremeMusic (not Extreme Audio). They can be found used for about $45 and a great cards. If you were running Vista, I would recommend the ASUS Xonar series.

That card only works in the ASUS boards with the dedicated PCIE-1X slot. So it would only work in the P5E/Maximus Formula or P5E Deluxe/Rampage Formula for example. There are more boards I believe that support them, but they have to originally ship with them.

X-Bit Labs discusses the card
Quote:
The physical design of this slot is similar to PCI Express x1 but turned by 180 degrees, however there is no electrical compatibility with the PCI Express x1. The thing is that Supreme-FX is actually not a fully-fledged sound card, but simply an analogue part of the sound tract connected to the AC97 interface. That is why you can only see a one microchip on the Supreme-FX card: the high-definition 8-channel Analog Devices AD1988B codec.

I heard it's a lot better than on board sound but i have never tested it out. How much you think i can sell it for ?

to the OP, spend a little bit more of money to get this soundcard. It's not the best, but it's pretty good for the price.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829132006
