Default Dual Sound Cards

Practical use?

I have the sound card in my sig and then the SupremeFX II that came with my motherboard, which isn't a bad card.

Now, I thought of this because I currently use the front port of my case and that comes with added interference. Would it be worthwhile using one of these soundcards for my headphones and the other for my speakers, if so, which would go where?

not this guy again

But in seriousness, Not sure vista would allow it. I know it doesnt allow installation of two different video drivers, could be the same with sound. Maybe you should try it.

Don't bother with the SupremeFX II, it's just onboard that comes in the form of a sound card. Definitely not worth it.

Vista specifically allows you to use more one than one audio device. Changing over would be as simple, I assume, as chosing which device to use.

My question is, is it practical and would I suffer in quality loss with the SupremeFX being a lesser card than the Creative XtremeGamer. Or rather: Would anyone else bother doing this?

EDIT:

Fair point, Marin, but would it be viable to get rid of the interference from my front port and do things this way?

I think I'd use the SupremeFX II for the speakers and the headphones in the Creative, baring in mind I use my headphones almost always.

Well, its not quite that bad. Its not a true creative card but it better than your average onboard sound.

It's not any better, its just a high rise card. Other brands do the same thing.

And it has lights on it, don't forget that.

So, what would Brian Boitano do?

Actualy Vista will aloud you to do it. You can also plug sound card 1 into sound card 2 line ln to do it also.

When sound card is the default, games where it doesnt let you select the card, the default is used.

Games like Quake wars ET where you can select the card to use for outputs and inputs you can.

I have ran Dual sound cards in vista before ages ago with a program called Veblac(req a creative card to send to another sound card) And without it.

The best thing that you should do is, get a sound card that has connection for front audio jacks on your case. so you can use speakers at the rear and your headphones in the front panel audio. XFI's should have front audio panel connectors,so do xonars and I pretty sure there are other sound cards that do.

Dunno about Vista (because the volume panel sucks in vista) but in XP it's really easy using two different sound cards. I used this allot when I was playing allot of music while playing games and such.
Using one for music and communication while the other sampled the game sounds.

Yep - Asus engineers were probably like:

"Boss, we don't have enough PCB space!" - Asus Junior Engineer
"Errrr, just put it onto its own card, so we save some space on the main PCB. It'll give marketing something to brag about..." - Asus Senior Engineer
