My 5.1 system had only 1 use to me: outputting mp3's to all speakers evenly. In XP, winamp did this automatically and it sounded great. Now that I'm in Vista, it won't do it, and all Surround sound plug ins give me an error message like "Format not supported".
I know Vista has a Speaker Fill option, but honestly, it sounds like crap. It tries to create a surround sound effect but what ends up happening is that the front is MUCH louder than the back. What can I do to get my old surround sound back? (Other than going back to XP)

do you have a reciever? I can just set my reciever to mono and get that. Also you could try foobar, tends to have a few more plugins.
