Default Beyerdynamic DT 880, Denon D2000, or AKG K701?

As the title says I'm having a hard time choosing the best pair of headphones. I was hoping you guys could tell me which ones you like and why. I mainly listen to rock, alternative, and pop... occasionally techno. I'm looking for really full/deep sound. And extremely comfortable.

Thanks.

I've always been a fan of AKG headphones.

Well I have the DT770 pro 80s, and can tell you that they're great cans if you love bass... great fro drum and bass, techno, and more. I'm not much into pop, so I can't tell you about that. Rock, sounds better on my HD650s, and AD700s. I love them.

Thanks for the replies. I've heard the AKG's are more for clarity, DT880's are more for bass, but what about the Denons?

do you have an amp? I know for sure the k701 needs an amp to sound its best. The dt880 also benefits much from an amp. Not sure about the d2000.

No I don't I will probably look into one soon though. Is there a best type or something? I know a desktop amp is generally better than a portable. I think I'm leaning towards the Denon's, they are better for my genre. The other option I guess would be the AKG's. From what I've read they have clearer highs, and sound warmer, but not as much bass.

I haven't heard the DT880 (and honestly have no interest in doing so at this point), so I cannot comment on it. As for the other two, this is a direct quote from a few posts of mine last week:

Quote:
Techno - D2000. It wins based on low-end quantity, a real necessity for getting the most out of electronica-related genres (well, most derivatives anyhow).

Rock - Toss up. D2000's can be slow and a little too warm for a fair bit of rock music I listened to when I had my pair. Supposedly, K701's can be very fast in presentation, which would be beneficial for metal. As Soloz has mentioned before, pairing a K701 with tubes could really be a killer solution in terms of going with complementary sounds.

~~~
Combo's I would recommend:
Denon D2000 with a nice solid state or hybrid amp - Eddie Current Solid State, Headamp Gilmore Lite, Little Dot 1+, Little Dot MKV.
AKG K701 with a mid-range tube amp - Little Dot MKII, Woo Audio WA3, Eddie Current Lunchbox II.
Hmmm ok. So if I listen to rock, alternative, pop, and techno what which of the two would you suggest? I will eventually get an amp so it's really comes down to which has more advantages. Also what about comfort? Are the AKG's as comfortable as the Denons? I really like the thought of the Denon's base, but also the clarity of the AKG's.
I cannot give an absolute suggestion of one over the other - they are entirely different animals that don't share many of the same characteristics. Out of your four main genres you listed, pop and techno fit the D2000, and anything rock-related is a toss-up depending on what type of presentation/coloration you are looking for.
If I had to lean slightly in either direction, it would be towards the K701. This is primarily because it's a headphone I find very interesting and I think it's got a lot of potential if you source/amp it correctly.
The AKG is not quite as comfortable imo, but it's close. K701 cups are HUGE, almost to the point that I found them slightly annoying while resting on my head. Denon is about as good as it's gonna get for pampering your head while listening to music.
