Hi,
I recently upgraded to a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P and it's a fantastic board - only problem is I can't get the rear speakers to work! Front and centre/sub work but every time I click on the black jack image in the Realtek Audio Input/Output the image just resorts to default (see screenshot). This problem is similar to Freebers problem but his thread didn't help me... I'm using Logitech X-540s, and I've updated my Realtek drivers to the newest (WDM_R221) yet still no answer. The only way I've been able to get sound out of the rear speakers is to enable matrix mode (button on volume control connected to sub). I've checked volume properties, and enabled the Front, Rear, Subwoofer, Center, Rear Black In, Rear Orange In, Rear Green in and none are muted. Btw, I'm running XP Pro just in case you need to know....

Matrix forces surround, I'm not exactly sure how it works but just leave it on, sounds better anyway. BTW I use the same speakers and I love them.

Yes, they are excellent speakers. I do have to disagree, however, that matrix sounds better. It actually reduces the amount of bass. I paid for a motherboard that is capable of 5.1 surround sound and I intend to use my rear speakers without matrix mode...
Anybody have any ideas? Could my motherboard be damaged?

Are you playing music? Not all programs will output 5.1, if any do it will most likely be emulated surround sound and not true.

shouldn't your front L/R be plugged into the green plug and not the grey..
I know you probably have it re-mapped grey=front l/r but usually green is the default. I have the same realtek HD panel on my system. My rear speakers dont work also but it's due to my rear channel being blown in the subwoofer box, lol. But what i have done is connect a cheepo pair to the black output (rear) and get my rear channel sound that way. And yeah not everything will output 5.1.. have you done the speaker test and does it output the tone when you do it or click on the rear spears it should tone too. If not maybe replace the wires.

another thing that bugs me about the realtek software is its 2/4/6/8 speaker and not 2/2.1/5.1/7.1, etc..

Good advice, I tried plugging the green jack into the green and then mucking around with combinations but nothing would get my rear speakers to play.
With my last system with realtek the Audio I/O diagram showed rear speakers, not side speakers. Does anyone have any idea how I can change the side speakers to rear speakers?

Well generally its
Green = front Black = Rear Orange = sub/center Gray = side Blue = input/aux pink = mic I would definitely say that if you have no rear sound at all even when you click on the rear speaker in the sound panel that their is either a driver issue/configuration issue or the wire is damaged. Also configuration wise have you gone into the sound properties for windows (Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > volume tab> Advanced(speaker settings/bottom)> and choose 5.1 As for the Realtek driver, Try removing it fully.. Unistall, Reboot and cancel when windows detects it cancel that annoying popup and install with a fresh driver from your mobo mfr's website or maybe even search realteks website for a driver. Sometimes by default this can be stuck on Stereo and that would produce no rear sound output.

I certainly know the wire is not damaged, matrix mode plays sound out of my rears.
Plus, I sort of have a quick fix - I plugged green into green, orange to orange and black to black but changed it to front speakers - now both my front and rear speakers play the sound that is meant to come out the front. Not really a solution for surround, but better than nothing. I guess I'll try a full reinstall later when I can be bothered. I should probably eat breakfast first... Thanks for the help though, rep+
