Default Recording from case mic jack

My top side/case audio panel does not work for recording only. The audio jack works on my headset (properly overrides the SB card), but the mic jack does NOT work for recording, on either a standalone mic or on the headset... here is more info and troubleshooting I have done:

First my hardware and software:

- Case (Thermaltake Armor Series VA8003BWS)
- MB (Abit IP35 Pro) (Software/drivers installed)
- CPU (Intel 3.16 Ghz)
- Sound card (SB Audigy ZS Platinum)
- Windows XP Pro SP3
- PC is clean of all malware and all updates are current

- I have tried both of the plugs into my MB, the AC97 and the Digital...
- Of course all sound options have been selected and set to the Realtek choices.... even there, I have tried the "HD Digital Input" AND the "HD Audio Input" and recording/audio volumes are all at least 90% high setting
- Recording DOES work when I plug it into my SB card in the back, so my recording hardware is fine
- When I plug in the mic into the recorder jack, Realtek software DOES recognize something having been plugged in, and I select "Mic" in the choice menu
- When I try to run a hardware test in Windows Sound Hardware Tester, it never detects the mic after it is plugged in there, so the mic cannot even be tested

Thanks guys and let me know if u need any more info……

Since you have a really decent sound card for this, I don't see any reason to use the onboard audio (other than to get "front panel" audio for your case). But, I'll explain:

I have the Audigy 2 ZS sitting right in front of me on my desk, and I am hoping that it's very similar to what you have. With the ports facing me, and with the sound card positioned exactly the same way as if it were plugged into a motherboard (chips and capacitors facing down), I have the following ports from left to right:

Firewire - Output 3 - Output 2 - Output 1 - Microphone - Line-In - Digital Out.

That's 7 ports altogether. Now, I'm a musician, and I used to record my drumming into this [budget] analog mixer using this sound card. I ran an RCA to 1/8th" stereo jack from the mixer to the Line-In jack, and I set the Line-In level to about 50%, and then adjusted the mixer to my liking.

I used Sony Sound Forge 7.0 (it was not a legit copy) as my recording software, and doing it this way as I just described worked very, very, very well. I loved the results. I had my own mini recording studio.

So, this is the way that you should do it too. I mean, the Audigy ZS is certainly better than the onboard audio on the IP35 Pro, so don't even consider using the onboard for recording.

If you do it this way, and if you make sure that you have selected the Audigy ZS in Windows, then everything should go smoothly. If you want, you can use Creative Wave Studio. It's kinda like Sony Sound Forge 7.0 a little bit.

If you want to download and install WaveStudio, then see the following:

Thanks for your response but it is not about quality or SB or recording... it's about the placement on my system.... it is like using the USB connection in the front of some computers rather than the back... I do not want to have to go to the back to plug in the jack every time I need to use this... on my headset, the audio and mic plugs are part of the same wire and cannot be split for great lengths... so I have my 7.1 speakers always plugged into the SB, and I just need a simple mic/audio jack, which my case provides, for the few times I do video conferencing....

You could have the luxury of disabling the onboard audio if you bought an 1/8th stereo extension cable like one of these:

http://www.radioshack.com/family/ind...goryId=2032256

Granted, the first couple are extremely long, but scroll down a bit further, and you have 6-footers, 12-footers, 20-footers, etc. What you would do is keep the extension cable plugged into the Line-In for recording so that you can place the port wherever you want, depending on the length of the cable. That way, it's always easily reachable whenever you need it.

And this is just the start. You can also get cables that split into 2 or 3 ports. So, then you'd get like a 6" splitter cable like that, and then plug it into the extension cable, and then put the splitter wherever you want so that it's within easy reach.

Yes this is definitely an option, but then I would need two more extensions for the audio, one for the jack, and one for the plug from my speakers, since I will have to plug that out to use my headset for audio with the mic... so 2 there and one more for the mic port, geez... ya definitely a last resort duct tape solution, but in that case, I probably just end up reaching back there and just doing the plugging and unplugging since I dont use the mic that often... what a pain... if only things just worked the way they supposed to!

You can't always get what you want.

But, if you get the right extension cables as well as the right Y-splitter cables, then it might end up being way easier than it seems. And it would allow you to completely disable the onboard audio.
