You could easily go with a better pair of headphones, but if you're going to be gaming mostly I wouldn't waste a lot of money on a pair. Also, the headphone/mic clip on setup is much better than any gaming headset.

A much much much better setup:

Soundcard: Asus Essence STX ($199, Newegg)

'Gaming headset': Audio Technica AD700 + Zalman clip-on mic ($102.85 from Amazon, see 'combo' in the link)

Speakers: M-Audio BX8a ($293 including ship from Amazon)

Total: $594.85

Now that's one pwnsome setup. It really is.

He plainly said he didn't want an overkill because he games mostly. $600 is extremely unnecessary for gaming.

I would still kill for that, though. Well, except the ADH-700s. I'll stick with my 595s haha.

I would trade the speakers for either Mackies MR5 as they have better bass response then M-Audio or I pick up a set of Audioengine A5's which sound awesome.

Those Mackies arn't active powered are they?
Also remember the Essence STX only has 2.0 lineout + those M-Audio's BX8a normally go for $450 New.

They are active studio monitors no amp needed. Just buy a set of XLR to RCA connectors or RCA to RCA and you can connect to the STX.

I'm running Mackies to my STX and they sound great especially the bass response when I turn it up.

Just buy a cheap headset. A $100+ headset is overkill. I'm using a $30 dollar headset from logitech and it's just fine for me.

Wrong.

This guy explains it better than me so I'll link it:

*I'll see a thread from you here in a few months time when that Logitech headset breaks and will quote this*
