Default 360 and PS3 with TV Optical Out

Now my PS3 and Xbox 360 are connected to my Samsung Plasma through both HDMI. Now my Plasma contains Optical out. I was gonna run a SPDIF cable from my Plasma (Optical out) to my Z-5500 (Optical in) for Surround Sound. Is this how I should do it?

Can I get true Dolby Digital / DTS through this setup?

I don't think that it will work. I believe that the optical out on tv's is to output the sound that you get from the built in, over the air tuner. It is not a pass through for other devices that are connected to the tv. Things might have changed over the years, but this is how it was when I bought my tv years ago.

ya this will work find. Its exactly the what I have set up with my Samsung lcd.

The menu should say "Optical" when its outputing.

This should work fine as it does for me.

EDIT: also it should do it automaticalty when you have your ps3 on and the tv on displaying the tv, it will automaticaly output the sound. I didnt have to set anything up except plug in the optical cable and it worked.

Should be fine. Digital to optical will yield the same. Analog however, i am pretty sure would be a horse of a different color.

Apparently my plasma only contains Dolby Digital out......not DTS....That most likely explains why I only get Dolby Digital on my Z-5500

I don't think it should make a difference. I made a thread on HF a few weeks back because someone was showing me a monster cable(lol) for the xbox 360, and in the jack for the 360 there was a little 2.5mm port, where you buy an adapter that converts that into an optical. I was curious to see if that'd have the full quality so i asked hf and was told yes. And since HDMI is digital, it should be the same case.
