For the ASUS, which would be better? the pci x1 or pci? i've got plenty of airflow around my graphics card either way.

PCI has a bandwidth of 133mbs while PCIe x1 v1.x has a bandwidth of 250mbs

But in sound cards it doesn't matter.

With PCI being a dying socket, I would go with the PCIe x1 card.

You can "almost" never go wrong buying something more future proof. If you are sure airflow will still be good, go with the PCI-E x1. I would choose the PCI card for my motherboard, since I have a big honking dual-slot 8800GTX, and the x1 slot is the next slot over. The 8800GT is a single-slot cooler, I assume, and your board may have a better layout than mine in that regard.
