Not it at all. You cannot EQ a more textured presentation, and this is one of the focal points for Grado's house sound.

I do not believe in EQ'ing myself. If you have to use an EQ, then you have not yet found components that match your musical preferences. This is somewhat of a purist view, but I like to leave the responsibility of the sound fully to my components so I can sit back and relax to a wide range of music.

I too do not like to mess around with the EQ settings for any of my music; I'd rather let it be natural and sound the way it should. So, based on that, Grado's headphones sound good without tampering with them for rock/metal types of music?

Also, being open headphones, if I were to pick up a set, would it be a better idea to just get a set of IEM's as well instead of trying to find a closed set of headphones just because I listen to music on the go a lot?

In my opinion, yes. Paired with a dedicated amp or not, they perform well, though an amp certainly has its uses and is something one should consider for a future expenditure.

Yes. Unfortunately, my knowledge of IEM's is severely limited because I have little use for them so I probably cannot help you there. Others here on OCN should be able to .

Like I said though, it doesn't really matter. There is no right or wrong with these types of things, it is all a matter of personal preference.

Okay, thanks for all of the info! I'll definitely look into the Grado's, and possibly even a dedicated amp further down the line. I don't want to jump that far into it right away, I'm one to slowly move forward, and I'm starting by getting a good set of audiophile cans for a new entry like myself.

Thought so. Okay, I'll keep asking around about IEM's then, and try to get a decent pair to compliment the set of cans that I'm also trying to buy.

So, looks like for now I'm looking at the Grado SR-80's and hopefully a set of IEM's for my Zune. Anyone else have any input? Thanks for all of the suggestions, you guys are great!

sr60s/80's are definitely the way to go with your tastes.

You would also want to go open if you want to get the most out of your money in your pricerange. Closed cans at that range won't really compare. The only ones that even come to mind in that range are at a700's or denon d1000's, but they won't outperform the sr80's or 555's.

And you can't really compare 555's with grados in terms of what's better. They are both horses of completely different colors. 555's are like, for your acoustic instruments like piano/guitar/high vocals while the sr80's are punchy suitable for all sorts of rock. With your needs grado would be the way to go.

As for IEMs, it depends on what your budget is. You can nab jvc marshmallows for like 20 bucks at walmart. Denon also makes an IEM called ahc 350. I've seen them go for 20 on amazon sometimes, most of the time they are 40 though. fantastic bargain. I would peg them equal to or above shure se110's, which were in the 100's range when my bro got them.

SR60s will do the job nicely. You can probably find some SR80s used at head-fi.org within your budget.

I've heard that the JVC Marshmallows aren't too great of quality, and seem as if they wouldn't be much better (if any) than my current in-ear Skullcandy's. The only reason I'd buy a new set of IEM's would be to get a set that are pretty significantly better than the Skullcandy Ink'd buds I have now.

I found a set of new SR80's on Amazon for $95.00 new. When I was looking however, I also noticed a set of Grado Prestige Series SR80i's, and I wasn't exactly sure what the difference between them and the regular SR80's was.

Same with the SR60's and SR60i's. Is there a difference in the models?

For the price they are a great bargain. I only got to try em out briefly, but for the price i was impressed. And anything will really be better than skullcandy's. If your budget allows it go for the denons then though.

Are these the Denon's you're talking about?
