Default Upgrading my 2.1 setup

I currently have a 30 watt harmon/kardon 2.1 speaker setup from when I got my dell computer back in 04 or 03. They're pretty good speakers, certainly stood the test of time well. But I would like to upgrade to a nice set that can really take advantage of my prelude. I'm looking to spend around $200, what do you guys recommend?

This is the setup I have in my dorm right now:

I think you should look at active monitors instead of PC speakers, you'll get better sound quality for the money, but you'll lose a sub at that pricerange.

You could get a budget subwoofer and a pair of budget bookshelf monitors for around $200-250.

Yea for a dorm I would say power speakers like tudj said, dont need the powerful bass cause youll get noise complaints.

Alright, I can live without a sub for a while. I don't really know much about active monitors. What kind of active monitors should I look for? Am I going to need an amp for them?

You won't need an amp as they are self powered (active) this means that they have an amp built in.

I've not really paid much attention to whats the best at the moment but I've seen Swan, Mackie, M-Audio and Audioengine recommended alot.

This

Audioengine A2

Plus add in the "DHT10" coupon code you get 10% off.

IMO, the best speakers made for a computer. btw, I use to run Logitech and these speakers blow them out of the water.

If you need more incentive check out the review on Stereophile Magazine.

Payoff
I have never been more impressed with or more stunned by a component I've reviewed for Stereophile than I was with the Audioengine 2. The level of sound quality produced by this uncolored, detailed, articulate, and dynamic speaker, in all situations, was beyond reproach, and its ratio of value to cost borders on the criminal. It extended my enjoyment of music into a new realm of portability that I hadn't before thought possible. I can't think of a single reason why every reader of this magazine should not go out right now and buy a pair of Audioengine 2s. I couldn't decide which finish I liked better, the white or the black. I bought a pair of each.

Um, a T-amp will do the trick very nicely. The Lepai LP-2020 is sub $20 and is crazy bang-for-buck if you read up on it.
