Speakers go into amp, amp goes into the PC via aux cable (well my mates does), or into ipod via aux cable.

Yes the "source" is the PC soundcard itself. So even if you run it through a Amp/Reciever, the Amp will only put out what its givin.
I have a Asus Xonar DX and love it. The cleanest sound Ive ever heard. I know theres better, but either through My Klipsch Promedias or better yet my recently aquired ATH-A700's its by far better then Ive ever heard. I can tell you it sounds better in a lot of ways than my Yamaha 5.1 receiver.

Especially on the headphones, once you listen with em you'll forget you even have speakers.
