Default An AKG K55 headphone review & next upgrade suggestions?

Due to a recent upgrade of my soundcard to the Fully Modified Prodigy HD2 I think it is the right time to give an overall review of my 3 years old budget AKG K55 headphone as a conclusion before my next upgrade.

Apart from the sound quality, I think comfort should come closely second in judging a headphone. The best sounding headphone is worth nothing if it brings discomfort to the head. >: )

That said, the K55 is an extremely comfortable pair of headphone. I wear it for many hours at times and still felt very comfortable.

As for the sound, they go low, and have no difficulty pelting out the bass frequencies where my speakers sounded feeble. However, turn them up and they struggle to maintain the bass clarity. As far as midband and treble frequencies go, they're nothing remarkable but do the job perfectly adequately. I have no qualms with this set of headphones, considering I paid $55, and I've seen them advertised between $39.99 and $79.99 online. So on that front alone they score very well as a set of budget headphones.

I am open to suggestions for my next set of headphone. I am looking for mid range phone with good bass extension and clarity. Like I mentioned in my review, I like the sound of the SR60i a lot but someone also suggested AKG K242 or Sennheiser HD 465.

I don’t mind second hand phones via Ebay… just looking for great value and performance!

Some suggestions will be most welcomed.

If you like the AKG sound, the K271 are a great pair of headphones for the price, especially if you replace the stock cable. They don't do too bad without an amp, but definitely sound better with one.

Thanks for the suggestion

I am planning to drive down to one of the local dealer and listen to a few. I will put the K271 on my list. The $150-170 price tag is just right for me Thank you.

Any other phone within this price range?

I listen to a bit of RMB, new age, jazz and some orchestral but since I brought my new sound card which is also a decent headamp I now listen to more orchestra and jazz.

I like phone that is natural and accurate with clean top end.

cheer

The K271's are right up your alley. I would however, recommend a Blu Tak mod to add a bit of density to the cups to tighten up the bass response. Also an upgraded cable using Canare Quad or some other equivalent really helps with the clarity.
