I know, this has been asked a million times, but I can't decide. Reviews tell me the Asus Xonar Essence STX is good for gaming, but everyone on the forum seems to prefer the X-Fi Forte. I will primarily use these with headphones, and therefore will be using the headphone amp heavily, but possibly plan on buying the z5500 sound system (possibly, not definite). I would prefer arguments not based on EAX support, as this is a moot point for most games I would play. Also, i can get these cards for the same price (around 120)
Thanks in advance.

It all depends on whether you prefer Dolby Headphone or CMSS3D-Headphone.
Some people say that Dolby sounds more natural but I think CMSS3D has better directional capability.

Honestly, comparing my gaming rig's xfi fatality vs my folding rig's stx, I prefer the stx for gaming. Though I don't fps a lot so it may not apply to what you're asking. STX is a great overall card which will give you one of the best music experience you can buy.

Invest in a good amp and pair of stereo speakers. It will be one of the best investments you can make for your computer experience. You don't need anything fancy either. I have a $400 amp and $200 speakers. I know it sounds like a lot but those are just the retail prices, I actually picked up my gear for a LOT less. I haven't heard those two cards so I can't tell you which to get. I know I love my Xonar D1, and I haven't had any trouble enabling mulitchannel sound in games.
