Default sound problems

I have foxconn 945p7aa chipset and realtek high definition audio driver, and for some reason its stopped functioning. I only get sound through the left ear. I have tried to uninstall the driver through add/remove but get this message "error number 0x80040707 Descriptionll function call crashed:ISRT.verGetFileversion set up will now terminate"
I have tried system restore, because everything was fine ealier on today, but no good. I have tried other headphones but get the same problem, and have navigated the audio settings to make sure its set for headphones. Help!
