Ive noticed that with my 5.1 system, the front channels overpower the rear channels, even when I stand further towards the rear speakers. This makes it a little difficult to hear rear sound effects in games. I was wondering, is there any way (preferably free software/driver changes) I can amplify my rear channels?

If the audio controls you have dont allow for surround volume adjustment, then there is no other software that will control it. Some speakers allow for adjustment. Check for updates to the drivers just in case they have added any more functionality to the software.

If the software did not include an option to amplify the back, would it be possible for me to hook up an in-line amplifier somewhere along the cable or would this just damage the speakers?

surely the software will let you turn down the front and center speaker hence the rear will be louder.
