In terms of overall system performance, not too much.
But when you hear the quality of the sound form a sound card, you will be blown away. It cannot be described how much better the sound gets, like going from onboard video to a dedicated video card.

Depends on the quality of the sound card. but even my $30 Creative Sound Blaster Live! sounds miles better than onboard. I can't even imagine the quality with A good set of speakers and an X-Fi Platinum or something. If you're considering getting a good sound card, definently go for it.

A sound card will:
*Remove the crackleing/hissing noise from your speakers
*Process audio so the CPU doesn't have to do it
*Allow you to overclock higher

Also a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS will:
*Allow you place speakers in strange places and still have good sound, though THX software
*Allow you to listen to EAX so games are a lot more realistic
*Process special sound effects (example: female to male voice change)
*There are more but I haven't found them yet

I don't know about X-Fi, but it's supossed to be 10X better than an Audigy 2 ZS
