Yes it is possible to use the Intel SSD toolbox with the Kingston SSDNow V Series SNV125-S2/40GB. The Intel SSD Toolbox is a great tool for maintaining the health of your SSD, viewing statistics and running diagnostics to test the health of your SSD. The below was only made possible due to a user Telnet providing us with a method of modification.

The Intel SSD Toolbox only works with the Kingston 40GB SSD due to the fact it has Intel brand internals such as the flash chips and the Memory controller. The Kingston 40GB SSDNOW drive is for all intense and purposes is an Intel X-25-V SSD.

Before you can proceed with this guide on how to use Intel SSD Toolbox with your SSD you must first flash your Kingston SSD with an Intel Firmware. So firstly please view and complete this guide: How to get your Kingston 40GB SSD to support TRIM

So once you have performed the the above guide we can now move on and modify Intel SSD Toolbox to work with your Kingston SSD.

Now we have two methods you can either modify your default Intel.exe file with the guide below or Download my modified version attached to this thread at the bottom and replace the stock Intel.Exe in your Program directory.

For this modification we need to edit some Hexadecimal values within the Intel SSD toolbox.Exe file. First lets download a HEX Editor. I would suggest using this Hex Editor : XVI32

This is the one we will be using in this guide.




Here we go...

Open up the XVI32 Hex Editor application. From here we will open up the Intel SSD Toolbox.EXE. To do this go to ''FILE'' and then ''OPEN'' as shown below.




Now navigate to the directory where you have the Intel SSD toolbox stored. This for me is under C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Intel® Solid-State Drive Toolbox 9. When you navigate to your directory you will see the below and you want to open up the file named ''Intel SSD Toolbox'' as shown and highlighted below.





Once you have opened up the .EXE file in the hex editor you will then need to navigate to the Hex address that needs editing to allow the Toolbox to function with your Kingston SSD.


Within the Hex editor click on ''Address'' and then go down to ''GOTO''



Once you have selected GOTO you will be prompted with a new windows to navigate with. From here select ''Hexadecimal'' and in the Hexadecimal field type ''$24854''. See an example below.






Once you have clicked ''OK'' you will see the below. You will notice that box ''53'' is highlighted in blue. This is the bit we need to edit. Simply replace 53 with ''00''






Now we have replaced the value 53 to 00 you now simply have to save the work you have performed. Simply click the ''SAVE FLOPPY'' icon as show below.





Now exit XVI32.

Congratulations. All done




There you are. All done. Now when you Open up the Intel SSD Toolbox, all the options will now be open to you as shown below!

Works for me but my SSD won't stay on new firmware

Can I still use this with the original firmware?

? Once flashed mate its flashed. If programs are reporting it as the previous firmware then there is an issue with the application. Have you gone back to reflash it and seen it has actually reverted back to the old firmware ? If so then it cannot of flashed. Things don't flash themselves back on a whim

My SSD would disagree with you

As I said, the Intel update flashes it and reports it as having flashed. I shut down, wait 10 seconds and reboot. I start the Intel firmware update program again (as it suggests to do in Intel's guide if you want to check that it has worked) and it reports that it still has the 2HA firmware and asks if I want to update. If the flash had been successful, it would have said that the new firmware was installed and that there was no need to update.

I conclude therefore that either the drive is flashed and does not retain the firmware or that it doesn't flash and the Intel Updater is faulty since it flashes and initially reports the update as successful.

Hmmm. As I suggested in the other guide try and run HDAT2 and restore the drive first and then try flashing again. If that does not work then I am also a little lost.

It seems that the firmware was never updated and somehow the firmware loader reports the update successful although it wasn't. Do you have the possibility to try the update with another motherboard?
