Use captchas?
Ok, I don't think I'm the only one getting seriously annoyed by all the spam posts that we get.
I was thinking of installing a captcha application for new member joins. That way those stinking bots can't get past. I know it's an annoyance, but I'm for it (one time during join) if it reduces spam. I, also, do realize that there is hardly any forum spam bots, but it does happen on a frequent enough (IMO) basis that something has to be done. What do y'all think?

you mean like those 2 that i just reported a second ago, the free color lappy and the free $ 500 target gift card.... yeah thats about the third time I've seen the same spam bot (or set of adds) roll through this site... if a captcha stopped them I'd be all for it. I also know that bots can get around captchas.

I think those are real people.
I heard some sites offer free Ipods or what ever for people doing that on sites.

I suggested the same thing a while ago on a discussion about spam. I agree, I think people should have to do a captcha to post a thread. Either members with less than a certain amount of rep, or everyone. I wouldnt be terribly bothered by it. If I need to post a thread, Id be willing to put up with a captcha.

No, not every thread gets its own captcha... Every new member joining gets a one-time captcha.
EDIT: Or... Captchas for every thread in the marketplace

well the marketplace is already has the 15 rep restriction to post a thread, so its safe, the recent attacks have been wide spread throughout the rest of the sites categories.
last one I saw was in the laptops section...
