The bots tend to get through it anyways, and I think it just creates a big hassle for legit people trying to join.

Actually, I wouldn't use a CAPTCHA. With several of the major bulletin board software solutions, they aren't too difficult to bypass for bots. Instead, what I would do is create a mandatory custom field at registration that involves a simple math question, such as 11-2 (Eleven minus two). I did this on my website, and have had zero bots since.
