Firstly, CAPTCHA is cracked and there are bots that can identify the letters in there.

Second, there are paid humans who signs up, then a bot logs onto all the forums that the humans have signed up to and then the bot will take over the account and spam.

I did this on my website, and have had zero bots since.
I agree with this idea. A simple field that requires an answer that a bot can't easily interpret would be cool

Another method I heard of once was an checkbox on the signup form marked "Don't check this box" or something like that. Humans see that and don't check it, but bots go "lol box" and check it, then you just set it up so that it blocks accounts that check that box.

I dunno, anything to get rid of these bots. They are getting aggressive. One posted about 5 spam deals at once a few days ago.

Thanks for that... I don't know how a bot reads a picture, but I am sure they found a way past it. And I can only assume that people do sign up for this stuff anyways... So maybe like said before, using a rep system to post deals might be nice. Not sure what the admins have said about it, I didn't really look for the thread.

The bot wouldn't be 100% with the picture, but they usually can get it after a few trys.

I think the simple math or simillar question sounds like a good idea though.

We do. Here is just a random example I pulled off our registration page:

The spam we have had the last few weeks is live people, not bots. There are many things we could try to do to keep them out, but in reality where there is a will there is a way and the best option is for us as staff to be vigilant about cleaning.
