Default Post Deletions

I'm always annoyed when a thread gets deleted. That's normal. (I invested my time into the thread, and it disappears!!)

But just recently a thread entitled "Folding is a waste" was deleted.

So I ask this: What ever happened to intelligent discussion? This thread did not violate the ToS. Although I believe there may have been a post or two which violated the rule: "You do not troll or attempt to stir up trouble within the community" (Although, I was unable to see the last page, which could have started to get out of control, but the thread was deleted to fast!)

I feel there was a bias with the moderator who deleted it because it was contrary to their own belief. I believe such discussion needs to take place. Again, intelligent discussion.

Thoughts? (Even on post/thread deletions in general.)

It was trolling. It was treated the exact same way any other trolling thread is treated. If someone makes a thread "I Love my PS3" and then someone replies with "PS3 sucks" that post will get deleted because it was obviously intended to stir up trouble. Creating a thread "Folding is a Waste" in a forum that is dedicated to our folding team is the same thing. It was done to stir up trouble and create drama. There is NO reason to keep that sort of thread around. There are many members that beleive that folding is a good thing, that is thier forum. If a thread was created in the Rants and Raves section and the topic was civil then nothing would have happened. This topic besides being misplaced INSTANTLY turned into a flame war, which is a violation of the TOS.

I agree. Take care of the member(s) that are causing the trouble. Not the whole thread. There is nothing wrong with debating. Especially if the thread started, in this case about folding, may have not known something about is, and learned from discussion.

Good point.

I suppose. Although, I do agree the thread was started very negatively. And yes, the topic was misplaced, I agree.

Thanks for the feedback.

I strongly agree that an intelligent discussion on the F@H issue is needed if for no other reason than that it was brought up. In general it would be hoped that any such relevant question could be freely debated, but unfortunately some people aren't able to make serious contributions and resort to mudslinging. Combine that with the mods hair trigger thread deletion mantra, and we don't get to talk about anything slightly controversial in any sort of intelligent fashion.

Perhaps a heavily moderated weekly thread on a relevant controversial issue, or an invite only discussion as a feature or column would be a solution to working through those nitty-gritty topics? Some sort of format where there can be a serious debate (you know, with things like evidence, which unfortunately seems in short supply here?) with out the flamers.

You may call it a "hair trigger" if you wish. I saw a thread that had no business being around. It isn't wine, and wasn't going to get any better with age. The very first post was antagonistic, and without the first post a thread cannot continue.

A civil debate on the pros and cons of the folding at home project would be wonderful. However, I haven't seen anything that resemebled a civil debate on this subject to date. When it comes around I would love to read it.

Thanks for your reply.

I would definitely like to see something like what The Bartender Paradox suggested, though it probably wouldn't happen.
