GTX 460 Core/Shader clock idle after folding

Thread Starter
Hey guys I have a ASUS GTX 460(768MB) and [See System Sig].

Whenever I fold, my 460 hits it overclock speed of 850/1700mhz core/shader, however whenever I pause or kill the folding execution, the clock speeds go down to 405/810mhz

A restart fixes it and reverts back to normal 850/1700 OC speed. This only occurs after I have had the PC folding. Otherwise it runs games and benchmarks at full OC speed and dials down at appropriate idle times.

System sig is my current system, I am using EVGA Precision, Furmark, and ATI tool to OC and check for precision.

What are your thoughts guys?

Rightclick on the desktop and go to nVidia Control Panel. In "Manage 3D Settings", change "Power Management Mode" to "Maximum Performance".

See if that helps. smile.gif

Thanks, but it's still throttling it back down to 405mhz, no matter how long I run the fold.

I can run the folding client for days @ OC speeds, but as soon as I pause or kill, it steps down to a permanent 405mhz regardless of what I do... otherwise it hits 850 regardless of conditions, folding is the only that that does it... frown.gif

Ok, a few questions:

1) What drivers are you using?

2) When Folding, are you getting 100% (or thereabouts) GPU usage?

3) Have you tried setting up an OC profile in RivaTuner, and seeing if that sticks when restarting the GPU client?

^Above should answer any questions about my GPU setup.

I do get 100% GPU load while folding.

And no I have no tried RivaTuner. I'll try that if you think it'll help.

GPU will downclock it self to 2D clock mode to prevent the card from burning, getting any damage.
Did you check the temp?
Did you run any Stable test for long time?

You should go back to the older driver

Sounds like an OC fail. Add volts or drop clocks. I would drop clocks to 800 and see if the problem persists then work from there.

Thanks for your efforts guys! I am currently trying to get into the Sandy Stable Club so my rig is occupied by Prime 95 for the next 8 hours (made it to hour 4 woohoo!)

What I will do is try to run it at stock speed (700mhz core/1400mhz shader), run the Folding client on the GPU, and see if it dials back down the 405mhz again.

I'm really at a loss here, it folded for 24 hours straight consistently @ 850mhz core... and then once I finished the WU it dialed down to 450. (Temps never went above 66ºC). Anyway, I'll let you know later this afternoon/evening EST

Thanks guys! Extra thanks to zodac! Second time you've helped me. biggrin.gif

EDIT: Also note, to debate whether this is an OC-argument issue or not. I set CRYSIS settings to the point where the card will render 50fps @ 100% GPU Load, @ 850mhz, and when I quit the game it doesn't try to step down the clock speeds... Just thought I'd throw that out, however, I know folding is a whole different ballpark.

Ok guys, here's something interesting:

I tried an underclock run for the GTX 460: Here's the settings

410mhz/820mhz/910mhz core/shader/memory

Ran Folding, it stayed at 410 while folding, but then when I quit it went back to the 405mhz AGAIN! So it's going to 405mhz after folding even when underclocked! This is madness... frown.gif

Also note: I tried Asus SmartDoctorII This time to overclock. The message I get when trying to up the clock is:
Engine Clock: Setting to 700mhz. Actually set to 700mhz with error of 0mhz

so it seems like the OC utility thinks it's set it correctly... any ideas?

Hmmm I've got the same problem as the OP. Pausing folding causes the clocks to go down to 405/810/1950 (P3 power state), and I can't get the card to run at P0 until I restart the comp.

I'm running a Hawk GTX 460 at a stock of 811/1622 and an OC of 850/1690. The folding-pause-downclocking problem occurs whether or not it's OCed. Load temps are ~56C. The problem occurs with both 270.61 and the beta 275.27 drivers.

Also, I'm using FAH GPU Tracker, if that helps. Like the OP, I don't think it's a problem with our OCs, since we're stable under load, and the problem still occurs at stock clocks. It's also probably important to note that I'm using a dual display setup.

Thanks for any help (or sympathy tongue.gif) you guys have to offer!
