Quadfire is reasonably terrible (while tri-fire is pretty sweet), L3 cache will be used for what exactly? In 4 years time you could potentially buy another high priced server chip that will get destroyed by whatever platform is out there if you wanted, sure.

Seems mildly odd to suggest that somehow a Xeon + SR-2 is underpriced compared to say a 2500k and whatever SB mobo you want to look at. But if that's what you want, go right ahead and get it.

Now if you're running some sort of application you haven't mentioned yet that would really benefit from such a set up it could certainly make sense I suppose.

I need HT for video encoding, the 2500k is out the window for me.

I got an E5620 for $90 the other day. Can't wait to pop it into my motherboard and test it out. I have read that it runs really cool and doesn't waste as much electricity.

Either that or I will put it up for sale on eBay because I kind of don't feel like taking down my whole system just so that I can solder a point on my motherboard to make it compatible with westmeres.
