I would be so happy for a new Star Ocean, I wouldn't care that much if it looked the same to be honest.

Probably because that wasn't mo-capped or anything. It was probably done by hand really quick, just like how there is no voice overs. At least, thats why I would think it wasn't too great.

I just bought Star Ocean: Last hope International for the PS3. Im really enjoying it so far. Im hoping Tri-Ace/Square-Enix make a Valkyrie Profile 3. Nice video though, looking forward to seeing some more JRPGS by Tri-Ace.

They're still around, just mostly on handhelds or they don't get localized (looking at you, Nintendo).

With the world's attention moved to Western developers (much to my dismay), Japan's shift to handhelds and rising development costs, don't expect to see JRPGs make any sort of comeback on home consoles, save for the efforts of Square, Atlus, Tri-Ace and a few others.

Heck, PS3 and Xbox 360 were already too risky for a lot of niche developers, next generation systems will only exacerbate the issue, though 3DS and PSP2 will likely remain a safe haven for the time being.

Somehow developers like NIS, Gust, Compile Heart etc. manage to stay afloat on current gen systems, despite many of their console games being some of the worst JRPGs I've ever seen.

Luckily I'm one of the folks that still likes what Square is doing, so I always have Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, etc. That and Mistwalker, plus the others I mentioned above. Bring on Resonance of Fate II, Tri-Ace!

Technical facts:
  • Rendered in real-time on Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3
  • Runs at 30Hz with 720p and is directly captured from the video output on the devkit

really not that impressed.

considering all the other demos we get like the new UE3, cryengine, etc. This was the least impressive.

i mean talk about way to much blur, and way to much lighting, its like they were trying to hide something, if you know what i mean.

Was that supposed to be like...in game graphics? Or was that supposed to be a CGI render.

For in game graphics thats not bad but for a CGI render that is just terrible.

We will probably never see a JRPG using those engines.

Those engines don't look good. Very unrealistic. Things still look like cheap plastic.

The difference being this engine is aimed at current consoles, thus the emphasis on being rendered in real-time on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

CryEngine had a focus high-end PC hardware from the very beginning, and UE3's Samaritan demo has next generation consoles/PC in mind.
