Core i7 950 @3.8 won't do 4ghz 20x200

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
Currently my rig is at 3.8ghz 19x200, 1.248vcore, dram/qpi -1.3, dram voltage 1.65 1600mhz 7-8-9-24, all spectrums disabled, c state disabled, turbo disabled, e1st, speedstep enabled, everything else on auto, runs stable.

When I up the multi to 20 for 20x200 4 ghz it fails linx after 10 minutes or so. I have tried
Upping the voltage until I reach 1.35v on vcore and still same results! I am almost certain that I'm missing something, do I need to change any other voltages? I also tried upping the qpi/dram from 1.3 - 1.4 but isn't it good at 1.3 since my 19x200 3.8ghz was stable?

Any help getting my baby to 4ghz would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I would say you need to loosen the ram timings. I had the same problem with my 930 the cpu was stable but the ram would fail with tight timings.

Try using the 21x multiplier. Everyone says the odd numbered multi's are more stable. and just increase baseclock as needed.

Also lower the speed of the ram for now until you can get the CPU clock where you want it.

I needed about 1.35v for 4.0, and mine wont do 200 BCLK either. Not sure whay, just does not like anything past 190...

I settled for 185, but run it on the 23 multi for 4.24, my ram is underclocked but the added CPU Mhz is more beneficial anyway..

Only other voltages you should look into are
QPI - For added ram Freq
VTT - For Higher BLCK

Both are listed on Intel data sheets as max of 1.35v, I need 1.33v VTT for 185 BCLK, but my QPI is fine at 1.25v....

All cpu's are different so you will have to just try and see.

See my Sig for BSOD codes and what they usually mean...

Still was not stable at a lower blck and an odd multi, I ended up updating my bios and running 20x200 @ @ 1.28vcore so far stable with linX (4 hours right now) temps are racing a max of 75c on one of the cores.

Doesn't your CPU have a 23 multiplier? Try that. It'll allow lower BLCK and you should get higher OC's with less voltage. Try out your highest odd numbered multiplier and adjust the BLCK to the correct number for whatever OC you are trying to achieve. If you end up BSOD then raise (or lower voltages) as needed.

Check your codes. For my i7-930 for instance, a 0x00000124 code is for qpi/dram voltage and if it has a number and letter (0X0000001A for example) then I read that is usually a CPU voltage error. Google them and ask around. I'm going by what I was told and read and as far as I know, someone could have been feeding me BS. Lol good luck.

Hello all, I have read this thread and am also a new overclocking dude. would like some advice for a stable 4.0ghz on my i7950

currently running this:
multi = 19.0
BCLK = 200
vcore = 1.25
DRAM bus voltage = 1.60
QPI/DRAM core voltage = 1.375

currently OC'd at 3.8 stable for ever but i want the extra mhz but i want to keep my ram at 1600

please help me thanks
