this guy wants a $3000-4000 build

SEEMS LIKE MANY PEOPLE SAY THE SAME THING, SO LET ME MAKE A NOTE IN ADVANCE:
1. WE ARE LOCATED IN CANADA, PRICING IS DIFFERENT (MORE EXPENSIVE HERE)
2. 13% SALES TAX + ENVIRONMENTAL TAX ON HARDWARE
3. THIS IS FOR THE MACHINE ONLY, ALREADY HAS SAMSUNG XL30
4. WE DON'T HAVE SAMSUNG SPINPOINT HERE
5. HE REFUSE TO BUY ANYTHING OCZ EVER AGAIN
6. AVERAGE WC`ING HERE COST $2000 SO HE DECIDED HE DOESN'T WANT TO DO WC

yeah i had the same reaction when i heard the 3000-4000 part
but this guy is 22 and he drives a c63 amg
anyways, he plays games...that's about it
that's why i decided to go all out on the gpu and ssd, and stay good enough for the cpu
this is what i got so far for him:

EDITED (ADVICE TAKEN):

i7 2600k cpu
asus maximus iv extreme
corsair vengeance 2x4gb ddr3-1866 CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9
sapphire hd 6990 (will unleash the beast)
asus xonar essence st 7.1
corsair hx1000
intel 510 series 240gb
wdc blue 1tb WD10EALX
cm haf x case
asus 12x bluray burner BW-12B1LT/BLK/B/AS
corsair h70

after sales tax (13%) and some environmental taxes, total comes to about $3200

Hmm, if it were my money I'd expect more. First of all, I don't think the Corsair Dominator is worth the money. Get him like 16GBs of some Vengeance (black), or Ripjaw Xs (red).
Going down the list..
For the video card, I'd rather have 2 570/580s in SLI, or maybe 2 6950/6970s.
Only if he is not planning to upgrade or is broke after the system.

Then to the main drive. Instead of an SATA 6, maybe you can go for a Revodrive which is much faster.
For storage, definitely save some money by going a single Samsung F4 2TB.
Or if you're feeling fast, two F3 1TBs or even F4 2TBs in RAID0.
I also don't think that you would want a mid-tower for a build like this. I like the Corsair 800D or the CM HAF-X. Both look SICK, and are great.
Bluray burner is fine..
And then to the cpu cooler.
If I were you I'd spend some extra money on a full wc loop. That's what I would expect from a system this expensive.
All this would be around a bit higher than $3500 but much much better.

he prefers 1gpu for some reason..i was thinkin 6990 unlocked but then lifetime warranty also sounds great?

yeah im just pickin a random case for now...it's still up to him to pick for looks

ive no clue about water cooling and neither does he...so

no samsung spinpoint here ... and he's devoted to intel ssd for some reason

a lot of random stuff, but hey it's his money

You can always add triple monitor and running either GTX590, 2 xGTX580 or HD6690+HD6970. Followed by a WC.

Edit: So if he prefer to single card, do he know about stuttering issue from sli and crossfire? Also do he want the games max setting with 4x aa and 16 x AF? If yes go for 1080p resolution monitors. If no 2560x1600 monitors are recommend.

Or you could raid 0 250 gb intel SSD, but it is recommend to take controller as without trim the SSD has chance died fast!!

I'd definitely agree. Spending that kind of cash, I'd expect a nice WC loop and better RAM imo. Revodrives are also nice. As for going raid0 on those drives... I might not. Just because then your risking if one of them goes, you lose ALL of that data, but I guess that depends on how he plans to use it... if it's just for storage then I wouldn't raid0.
I'd recommend the CM HAF-X too. Amazing case, have one sitting beside me right now. biggrin.gif

If a $4,000 build doesn't feature a full tower case, custom w/cing, and a triple monitor setup, then there's something wrong. Revise.

Exactly what I mean. I guess the RAID0 on storage is overkill but maybe you can RAID1 if data is important to you. F4s go for cheap. But since there are no spinpoints seriously get cheaper storage. I suggest WDC Greens.biggrin.gif
And also what Diabolical said.
Spend some money for a Trip Monitor display. I've seen a 22" 1080p LED backlit for $120 on Newegg.
As for the GPU, lifetime warranty isn't something you would use unless its something you would resell. I doubt your GPU is going to bail on you unless you do crazy sh-- with it. Get the unlocked 6990.
If you're not going to get a WC loop, you need some serious air to cool those components.
Also OC that i7 till it reaches 5GHz, but you need water of course.
