20mhz loss on fsb or lower timings question. which is better?

Thread Starter
i have a Q8300 2.5 stock but i have it up to 3.05 with my corsair dominator gt 1866 clocked down to 1600 at the moment with 8-8-8-20 timings. my question is, should i lower my clocks on my fsb from 400 to 385 and lower my timings to 7-7-7-18, or keep it as is? i know its stable at those settings as well.
Thanks.

Performance impact of frequency is often higher than impact of timings. I'd say keep it that way

Thanks. its performing very well with my current set up. i know this ram can handle much more, do you think i should up my cpu voltage to get the extra mhz? i load at 53c in prime95. also, is upping my north bridge voltage useful in this scenario or not worth the risk? thanks again

Not familiar enough with Intel. On AMD sys NB often heats a lot, especially with OC, so upping the voltage there can cause trouble.

I don't know if this is the case on Intel systems.

However, do try to raise the DDR volts by a notch - up to +0.1 should be perfectly safe, according to JDEC.

THen, try manually lowering the timings. If SPD CL7 causes trouble, raise just TRAS - no impact on performance, huge impact on stability. So raise that to comfortable level (25-30) and maybe CL7 will work with current freq

thanks for the tip with the TRAS settings im definitely going to try that. however, my ram is rated to run at 1.65v when set to run at its full triple channel 1866mhz 9-9-9-24 settings. im only using dual channel and they are both technically "underclocked" and i have them up at 1600mhz so i think the 1.65 should be sufficient. Also i wonder, can a voltage bump help me with lowering timings? i figured that would mostly just affect freq

thanks

by dual channel i mean im only using 2 of the 3 sticks out of this kit until i upgrade to a socket 1366

In some cases - yes. Maybe it's up to the specific sticks.

nice. and thanks for the help. i just dropped $145 on newegg for this 3x2gb corsair dominator gt 1866mhz kit which i plan to fully use in the future. these sticks are fantastic if your ever looking to upgrade. its a little expensive but so far its worth the $. does anyone know of any software (besides speedfan) that can adjust the fan speed on my zalman cpns9900 by any chance? thanks
