Quote:
"It means we can generate stable, renewable neural stem cells or downstream products quickly, in great quantities and in a clinical grade – millions in less than a week – that can be used for clinical trials and, eventually, for clinical treatments. Until now, that has not been possible."
It also means we are one step closer to immortality

Not immortality but much healthier living and regeneration from life threatening injuries.

Interesting stuff, although I am not going to pretend I understand any of this.. too early for my brain to process reading material.

I fear the day that life extending procedures and drugs become reality because you know it will only be exclusive to rich people. Middle class and poor folks will be expeted to die as usual.

Seriously, between this and folding@home, we could see a significant drop in all sorts of cognitive degeneration diseases like Alzheimers, Parkinsons, etc. Even just unclassified dementia could be slowed. And a sidenote: immortality will be brought about when we can make our mitochondria stick around for a while, though im not sure where an immortal brain plays into that. i think its a hormone thing....

Great news and great article. Thanks candy man!

I agree with Maxxa, that while this is great news, it will be cost prohibitive. It will go to some willing testers/rich guys who funded it, then to more rich people, to more rich people, to more rich people, to rich peoples' "beloved" pets...then...us.

Quick thought: If in the future you knew that you would have a lifespan of about, oh lets say, 300 years. How would you spend your first 290 years?

I am not a scientist and I could be wrong but as Stem Cells are the type of Cells that can form any type of cell characteristic then I do not see why not, not from a logical standpoint anyway.

Imagine the implications this will have on all nervous system injuries... paralysis of any kind potentially healed, burn victims feeling restored, as well as degenerative diseases. Wonderful step in the right direction.
