470sli bottleneck or just crappy scaling?

My question is, how can i tell if my sli setup is being bottlenecked, or if its just bad scaling based on the driver/game?

I have been trying to find out, because in a game like crysis 2, my gpu usage ON BOTH gpu's in SLI mode is 98%, which is really great obviously. Then i play crysis1, i'm getting like 40-50% gpu usage on both gpu's, same with BFBC2....

except with BFBC2, don't really care because i get 60fps (vsync) 32xCSAA 1080p..... so its not noticeable performance wise.

But on crysis1, i get fps drops into the teens sometimes and average about 40fps, then i look at my AFTERBURNER, and it only confirms 40-50% gpu usages.

So is it a bottleneck on some game and not others? or is it bad scaling in those particular games?

The original Cysis can only use 2 cores so it could be a cpu bottleneck

ok, that makes sense, but what about BFBC2? Doesn't That game have multi core support?

BFBC2 is absolutely FAMOUS for getting low GPU usage, esp. when playing online. There's even a sticky about it in this forum. People are on OCN like every day making this same complaint ... so it's not just you

Crysis does make quite a significant CPU load, and it can totally bottleneck w/even a fast CPU if you have enough GPU power (which you do). Although 50% sounds a bit lower than I'd expect for sure given your rig being i7 at 3.3. V-Sync is turned off, right? And you aren't 'forcing' anything like AA through the NVCP, right? If you are ... don't.

Although like I say 50% seems a bit lower than expected, I'm 100% sure that if you were to OC your proc more, you'd see GPU usage and FPS go up. I've done that test MANY times on Crysis

You could also try raising the settings a bit, as it's likely you could get away w/higher settings and it wouldn't lower your FPS much at all. And it should raise your GPU usage as well. Try 16xQAA in game ... I'm betting your GPU usage rises significantly.

Come to think of .... drops into the teens, though ... that hardly seems normal

What part of the game does that happen in?

Oh yeah to answer your other question by all means YES, CPU bottlenecks can exist in some games and not others. You can even affect CPU BN effect by changing the settings within the game. They are ENTIRELY 'situational' in nature.

I don't know but I'm getting 150~160 fps in BFBC2 obviously vsync off and everything is maxed (sig rig).
