Windows XP Sandy Bridge Install

Thread Starter
Hello all, found the community on Google while searching around. You've already answered one of my questions (I searched the forums), but I have three more for you all! But first some background; This is my first system build in around 5 years. The last system I built was a AMD 3000+ with a GeForce 6800GT [256MB] AGP, yeah, that long ago. I've been reading some reviews of the Sandy Bridge chips and how they are the second coming so I thought I would build myself a Server/PVR/Light Gaming computer. I'm pretty much doing an in place upgrade of my current CPU, Mobo & RAM. I'm keeping the PSU and I'll tempaliry keep the case (It's an eMachines case that current has an old P4 Prescott that I got from my sister who was not using it any more so I made into a home NAS / FTPd / HTTPd / Orb Caster). But as it's always on I wanted something that was going to use a lot less juice and be pretty potent should I need it. So I thought that because I'm also going to use it as a PVR I should get the i3-2100T (35W TDP). I already ordered the CPU and the RAM they are already here, I'm just waiting on the motherboard that should be here in around 4 hours. But as I'm going to be using Windows XP Professional as a stop gap OS until Mirosoft releases a SP1 Retail version of Windows 7 Professional I'm going to stick with XP for now. That leads me to my problem(s).

  1. Best way to slipstream the SATA drivers into the Windows XP SP3 CD?
  2. As I only have a IDE CD drive, I'm going to have to install windows from a USB drive, so that means I'm going to have to convert the Slipstreated CD onto a USB Thumb Drive. What's the best way to do that?

Any help would be appreciated.

Is this some kind of joke? Windows 7 SP1 has been out for some time now.

I tried to boot from the USB drive, but it seems that in any SATA mode that Windows XP is just not compatible. So I found a sign up for Windows 7 Enterprise 90-Day Trial online, and I also found this tool that allows you to take the Windows 7 ISO file and convert onto a bootable USB drive. So once I get the money I'll be buying Windows 7 Professional. (Unless I really like the Enterprise version.)

I tried installing Windows 7, but I get an error stright away saying it can't find the drivers. It asks for a driver disk or thumb drive. As I don't have a CD drive on this computer (yet) I moved over the drivers from the CD that came with the motherboard to a USB hard drive (NTFS formatted). From there I plugged the drive into the USB port and restarted the computer so that installation process would begin again. But it completely failed to see the USB Hard Drive. So now I moved the drivers onto the USB drive that has the Windows 7 install files, this time it sees the drive as (X: Boot) but I can't find the Driver(s) dir within the USB drive. What on earth kind of install process is this! I can't try anything right now, but if anyone has any tips that would be great.

Wait, your windows 7 install needs drivers for what exactly? Everything that's needed should be on that image. You might want to try and copy everything again just be sure that you're getting everything transferred.
