2600K + P8P67 Evo.. Confused...

Thread Starter
I just bought these parts yesterday and i hooked up my computer together...

When i check the core speed, it's at 1600mhz and when i try to stress test it, it's at 3400mhz...

I'm a little confused.. Shouldnt it be at 3800mhz when stressed?

This is Intels turbo boost feature. Give you power when you need it and slows down when you dont!

It helps with temps alot aswell!

It's called Speedstep. It's basically Intel's version of Cool & Quiet. It's very nice and isn't buggy like C&Q.

All it does is makes your CPU run @ 1600Ghz until you add stress to it, then it boosts up to how much it needs. For example, my overclock is 4.5Ghz, but it's 1600Ghz until I run a stress test. If I run Prime95 Blend it'll shoot right up to 4.5Ghz.

All in all, it increases the lifespan on your CPU by reducing clock speeds on idle.

shouldn't it overclock to 3800mhz instead of 3400mhz?

I think he's expecting the turbo boost to jump to 3800.

As I recall, 3400Mhz is all cores/threads maxed. 3500 3cores, 3600 2cores , 3700 1 core working, or something to that effect. Check your BIOS options, you can usually set it there.

3400Mhz is the default core clock speed when Turbo mode is DISABLED. When it is ENABLED it runs default at 3800Mhz.

Go into the BIOS and make sure Turbo mode is enabled.

If you want 3.8Ghz all the time, disable the turbo function and put the CPU multi to 38. If you don't want it to underclock to 1600Mhz disable EIST

I can't exactly remember, just go into the BIOS and look under "Advanced Options". It's in there somewhere.

Make sure it's Enabled.
