XFX 6950 1gb, how to tell the revision?

Thread Starter
I recently grabbed a XFX 6950 1gb card and want to know if I can unlock this one. How do I tell the revision to know if its the new board vs the original reference ones?

No 1GB card uses a reference design. Even some 2GB cards (XFX for example) use a non-reference design.

The original reference cards are 2GB; only those unlock of the XFX models.

Nope, 1GB isn't reference.

You are wrong. They have a chance to (not as likely as the reference designs) with the shader unlock mod. You can't use a 6970 bios, though.

@OP: You can try to unlock it but I doubt it will work. XFX is about the worst brand to buy now lately, they are secretly revising their cards to their own cheap designs and apparently they have changed their warranty policy to not allow overvolting either or something and there are also stickers on the back of these cards on the screws to remove heatsink, so if you take it off you void the warranty.

So much for modder friendly..

Radeon BIOS Editor, unlock shader, flash with ATIWinFlash.

v1.28

Fixed a bug that reported an error message regarding VendorID writing occasionally.
Fixed rare overdrive bug.
Added 6950 -> 6970 shader unlocking capability (will most likely only work for reference design cards).
Added 6990 DeviceID.

Everything that XFX has said about the newest revision is that it is an AMD design that could not be implemented at launch because of availability of the specific VRMs. XFX is not the only company doing this revision, the problem is that they aren't showing a clear change in the serial number. I also still haven't seen proof that the new revision is actually of inferior quality/design.

Er... where do you think the 1gb board design comes from? You mean to say that every company makes their own 1gb card?

2gb cards are now on the REVISED BY AMD design, and it's not just XFX. Add Sapphire, Powercolor, Visiontek, etc etc.

Actually, yes.

There is the original reference design, and then there is a second revision by AMD which some companies use (PowerColor 6950 2GB PCS for example) and then there is a non-reference design they also use (Powercolor 6950 1GB for example; Sapphire also have this).

The second revision cards have a much "cleaner" looking layout on the rear and have white outlines around the GPU area (mounting brackets) as well as all around the PCB - where as the other version does not. It was very similar to the reference cards that had the backplates, but the manufacturers used their own components etc.

The "rev2" pcb cards are kind of dying out too. They all had the bios switch, some of the new ones don't.

Here is what the original "non-ref" PCBs looked like and the new one - Not the exact same model but you get the point.

And the new ones:
