[WSJ]Sony shuts down PlayStation Network Indefinitely - Page 12

I just really REALLY have to correct some views on hacking... The misrepresentation it has oh boy...

First off, it is not likely Geo did this - his field of expertise is not in hacking into corporate networks.
Anon is not all script kiddies, but the majority are. Hence why they resort to DDoSing instead of attacks like this.
Who said the passwords were stored in plain text? I know you don't have much experience in hacking when... Ok, let me expand. Often times when you're trying to bypass a password you just want something that outputs the same hash, based on the algorithm used. Another possibility is to reverse-engineer the hashes. Takes forever. In the amount of time they were in, not a possibility. Chances are, they just got all the hashes, and in the time the network is down is what Sony is worried they'll do with the hashes. Mind you, if they used the same security as a certain bank did a few years ago... and md5 hash is SUPER easy to break. So... let's hope Sony didn't drop the ball for their hash algorithm.
There are many different fields in hacking. You will nearly never find someone able to be the expert in each field. It is likely not just one person is behind this.
Ok, before I write a huge wall of text on this, back OT. Err, one minute.

I use my computer for folding at home, for gaming, as a central server, media streaming, protein folding analysis for school, data calculation, word processing, media server, home theatre, etc. Did I spend too much on mine? I spent about 1200-1400$ on my PC, but for the price of the XBox360 at roughly 200$ plus 360$ for the entirety of XBL you have about 560$. But, you also have to buy a TV. The price of my system includes the price of both monitors AND my speakers. Sig rig ftw. The RAID5 array which gives it the high end of that price scale is for redundancy for all important data, which you can't get out of your XBox anyway... Point is, you're thinking WAY to narrow. PCs aren't designed for JUST ONE purpose. They are far far more dynamic than a console.

Don't take me wrong, I'm not a console hater. I have a PS3 (though admittedly if I didnt get it as a gift I wouldnt have bought one...). My buddy has an XBox360. Sometimes he can't afford the XBL so he just plays single player.

Each separate device has it's own specific pros and cons.

Ok, now back OT.

PSN may be down, but at least some people will be off doing something different rather than avoiding the sun for the duration they normally spend gaming. I know someone who normally plays PS3 for roughly 5hours+ a day... so I hope he's actually getting some colour in his pastey skin

This thread is rife with examples of how OCN is degrading into a sub-forum of 4Chan. "I LOL @ This" and "This is karma" "PC FTW" and such comments only go to tshow the immaturity and midget-mindedness of the people here.

This is effecting millions of people who paid for their consoles, who want to game with other people. Like it or not, a gamer is a gamer. I game on PC, I game on PS3, hell, I'd game on atari.

The elitism and Geohot-lovefest in this forum is pretty sickening. I wouldn't wish this on any company or person.

I'm LoL'ing at this post.

What Geohot did was a great thing, he did not intend for piracy and he wanted to unlock the PS3 to its full potential, which sony is constantly trying to lock it down. This is why many of us here enjoy our PC, we have complete control over it.

Consoles? You pop in a disc and go, you can't do anything with them, they're boring and don't offer much at all if you want to do more than gaming.

Personally, I enjoy jailbreaking my devices, it adds so much more potential to the device that the company wants to lock out, supporting sony would be more "sickening" than someone trying to give you freedom of something YOU PAID FOR.

Perhaps if they used Linux they wouldn't have been hacked.

Sony brought this upon themselves by taking linux out of PS3s.

Nobody gave a flying **** when Sony removed Linux, it's only when a hack that could be used to pirate and cheat was released that a lot of people suddendly wanted to install Linux on their machine

Sony removed Linux support only to prevent piracy and online cheating, if those hackers didn't try to exploit it we'd still still have Other OS on our PS3.

That would mean every site on the internet is turning into 4chan, because I'm pretty sure I see comments like this everywhere.

Also, it's affecting, not effecting.

Now all we need is Xbox Live to shut down indefinitely as well so developers can focus on PC gaming.

People are so ridiculous...

"Good riddance, win for PC gaming" "Console players and peasants" "Just play PC games"

REALLY?

I am a PC gamer and Xbox 360 gamer and I know exactly why people play consoles..

#1 Consoles are cheaper, maybe "Not in the long run" but think about this... A decent gaming PC can cost anywhere from $400-$700, if you build one yourself. Now, considering not everyone knows how to build computers, they usually buy them from Best Buy, or some technology store, chances are a computer labeled "Gaming Desktop" will go for anywhere from $800-$1000. Now, you figure an Xbox 360 Slim 4GB costs you $200. Now, say you pay for 2 years of Xbox Live service. Thats about $320 total. Even if you bought an Xbox 360 in 2006 for $300, you stack the $360 you've paid for 6 years and its only cost you $660 total (Excluding games)

#2 Consoles are more convenient, easy to use and you can play with multiple people (Up to 4) on one system. That makes a console much better in social situations, not only that, to start playing a game all you have to do is simply put the game disk in the drive..then boom your playing. When you buy a PC game you have to install it..sometimes work with punkbuster, ect.

Either way, is $7 a month to play really outrages? I mean it costs $15 a month just to play WoW and that doesn't include all the expansions and a **** ton of PC gamers play WoW. Half the people saying "I'd never pay to play online" are paying for WoW. Hypocrites.

Oh and the argument "You have to buy a TV for console gaming" is ridiculous. Everybody has a TV (Nearly Everyone) Anyways, I hook my XBox up to my Monitor w/ HDMI.

On a note...People are selling PS3 slims for $150 on craigslist right now.
