GTX 285 Comparison?

Thread Starter
So Right Now i am running the XFX Nvidia Geforce GTX 285. It running games like black ops and anything i've thrown at with ease and even on 2048x1152.

I want to keep my system up there as far as quality goes and think
the only things holding me back are a SSD and new GPU.

I guess my question is when you look at my specs? Which should i go for first?

Ie would a gtx 580 dominate my 285 and would i notice a big difference as far as eye candy and running anything for the future.

I am contemplating diving in now or waiting till after summer When BF 3 releases.

Any advice?

I got the upgrade/overclock bug. Hopefully i can contribute and am glad to be a part of these boards.

if you had to get a ssd or gfx card, ill go for the gfx.

you'll be seeing more benefit with it as well. the only times you'll see a difference with a ssd is when you're booting up, loading programs, and transferring files, and if you didn't have a problem with your loading times, then there's no point in buying a ssd. its also very expensive and wouldn't really justify getting it at its current price point.

also ssds are just beginning to hit the market and is quite relatively young. i would wait for them to mature b4 actually getting one.

Well if you want to go DX11 your GPU is the only thing holding you back.

A 580 is almost 2 times the power of a 285. Good luck with your choice.

I went from a 285 to a 470, big difference...

Go for it....

SSD next...

SSD will only help in load times of your games. While it does make windows much snappier and such, but your system is GPU bottle-necked right now...

The advantage you would see in games would come from a GPU upgrade...

thats my best Vantage run with 9550 @ 4.4 & 285 compared to the 9550 @ 4.25 & 470

Get both.

SSD is thuper thweet... 64 gigs is only a hundred bucks and plenty of room if you manage it right. You don't see all that much difference in games, but in windows for general use it's a world of difference.

Yeah its true with SSD's. I guess if I had plenty of money to blow i would do both. Right now im really looking at a 580. i hear 570's run to hot and a 590 is a bit out of my price range.

What good DX11 games are out?

The question is will the 580 still be a good card a year from now for that sort of investment? Or do you think the next nvidia series will be out this fall when battlefield 3 comes out?

One day I'm looking to go dual monitors or get a crazy 30'' or something.

I had dual monitors before but i wanted to get out of debt so i sold my dell 21' monitor. Having 2 monitors layed out nicely is a great feeling.
When i used to play WoW I would have itunes and all my other stuff on one monitor and the game in the other.

Haha yeah I run dual monitors and it's amazing. Don't think I can ever go back... Surprisingly enough it doesn't have that much impact on your gaming performance, because that other desktop uses no processing time and only a few MB of vram. So far the only game I've come across that is awesome and will use both monitors is supreme commander. (I <3 supcom)

My card is over 4 years old and it'll max a surprising number of games; and even the newer ones I can run at reasonable settings. 580 will do you good for at least that long
