New OC 950 Question(s)

Thread Starter
Hello,

I am following your i7 OC guide hoping to get my CPU to 4.0Ghz. I have been running my system for almost a month at stock settings with no issues.

Currently I am just starting as I write this (using my laptop). I am disabling the features suggested (C1E, IST, & Speed Spectrum so far) but for some reason... I have no option to disable Turbo.

Here are my system specs:

ASUS Rampage III Formula
CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) TR3X6G1600C8D
EVGA GeForce GTX 570 012-P3-1570-AR (SLI)
Intel Core i7-950
CORSAIR AX1200 1200W
Noctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO CPU Cooler
Antec Twelve Hundred
Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS RAID0
Win7 Pro SP1

Reading through my mobo manual the option to disable Intel Turbo Mode Tech should be listed in Advanced CPU Configuration right under Intel SpeedStep Tech. However... it is not. Am I missing something? Does something else need to be enabled/disabled to get this option to appear? I have searched through google but failed to find a fix.

Thanks for your feedback.

Bah never mind... reset my CMOS now it's there. I'm sure I will have more questions later though so thread will still be relevant lol... sorry.

Just to note... disabling SpeedStep hid the Turbo mode option.

Alright... been a long night for sure. Made it to work somehow on an hour of sleep but here we go!

For reference I am following this guide for my OC

Change notes:

-Disabled Intel Turbo Tech
-Disabled Intel SpeedStep Tech
-Disabled C1E
-Set Multiplier to x21
-Set LLC to Full

Tested... 1.224v 2803mhz 133x21 Idle: 36c-38c Load: 53c-55c

OK!

-Set VCore to 1.25v (BIOS auto corrected to 1.256v)
-Set QPI to 1.25v
-Set DRAM to 1.65v
-Set RAM timings to 8-8-8-24 (Stock)

Tested... 1.256v 2803.mhz 133x21 Idle: 36c-40c Load: 56c-60c

OK!

-Set BLK to 143

Tested... 1.256v 3013mhz 143x21 Idle: 36c-40c Load: 56c-60c

OK!

-Set BLK to 153

Tested... 1.256v 3223.5mhz 153x21 Idle: 36c-40c Load: 58c-63c

OK!

-Set BLK to 163

Tested... 1.256v 3431.8mhz 163x21 Idle: 38c-40c Load: 60c-66c

OK!

-Set BLK to 173

Tested... 1.256v 3641.7mhz 173x21 Idle: 38c-41c Load: 65c-68c

OK!

-Set BLK to 183

Tested... 1.264v (auto change?) 3850.0mhz 183x21 Idle: 38c-40c Load: 69c-71c

OK!

-Set BLK to 190

Tested... N/A 4000.5mhz 190x21 N/A N/A

FAIL! BSOD - <1 minute after OS load. Code: 0x3B Guide suggestion is to increase VCore.

-Set VCore to 1.27v (BIOS auto corrected to 1.2750)

Tested... 1.280v (auto?) 4000.5mhz 190x21 Idle: 38c-40c Load: 72c-75c

FAIL! BSOD - 2 1/2 hours. Code: 0xD1 Guide suggestion is to increase QPI.

-Set QPI to 1.26v

Tested... 1.288v (auto?) 4000.5mhz 190x21 Idle: 38c-40c Load: 72c-75c

FAIL! BSOD - 30 minutes. Code: 0x0A Guide suggestion is to increase QPI then try to increase VCore.

-Set QPI to 1.27v

Tested... 1.288v 4000.5mhz 190x21 Idle: 38c-40c Load: 72c-75c

FAIL! BSOD - 45 minutes. Code: 0xD1 Guide suggestion is to increase QPI

At this point I called it a night (morning?).

Some questions if I may...

1. Why is my VCore auto correcting itself in BIOS and in Windows? For instance I type 1.27 into the BIOS and it immediately changes to 1.275. I enter windows and CPU-Z tells me 1.288v. Is this normal?

2. At this point it looks like I'm just going to be adjusting QPI or VCore voltages until stable. Is it possible I will run into anything else? I see guides adjusting CPU PLL, IOH and ICH. Is it possible I won't have to touch these?

3. How spot on are these code assumptions. If the code is 0xD1 and the guide tells me to increase QPI is it possible QPI voltage has nothing to do with the crash?

4. I am increasing voltages by '.01' each time. Is that too much of a jump?

5. While in BIOS there are 'gray' voltages that keep fluctuating nest to my manual volt settings. These are what volts would be if I allowed it to be auto? Or is something still set allowing the computer to adjust on the fly?

6. Should QPI voltage always be higher than CPU voltage?

Thank you for your help and feedback.

Hrmmph... increased the QPI to 1.27v and got BSOD after 40 minutes with 0x1E error code. Guide suggests to increase VCore more based on this code... I'm now at 1.304v. I was hoping to avoid a 1.3v+ CPU voltage! Any suggestions or do I have no choice but to increase my CPU voltage? Any feedback on my previous questions?

Thanks!

Yes you are right - bump vcore a bit. 72-75C is fine, but remounting a cooler might help. I never needed bump on QPI till about 200 bclk. Try set it back to default 1.2V and see if it helps.

Another long night...

Thank you for your reply. Any and all feedback is much appreciated as I'm having no success getting this computer to run stable. I can't seem to get prime to run for more than 3-4 hours before BSOD.

Current settings are VCore: 1.325v, QPI: 1.34v... When I set the QPI back to default I crash after 20 minutes. Voltages are much higher than I wanted and temps are starting to reach 80c. One thing to keep in mind is the fact the ambient temperature of the room is around 80f-85f. It's hot and muggy outside and the AC is far too expensive to run this early.

Not sure where to go from here.
