Cant reach higher then 3.8 on E8400

Thread Starter
Hello, i have an e8400 (E0 revision) and i cant get it past 3.8. i have an p5ql-epu motherboard. when i try to set my fsb higher then 420 i black screen on boot. i no 3.8 is a good clock but i use an ps2 emulator (pcsx2) and every little ghz counts. im trying for 4.2. ive tried highering my vcore to 1.32 and it still black screen on restart. my ram is overclocked by 40mhz (its 800) so its at 841mhz. is it my ram? do i have to get 1066 ram? my vcore is 1.27 at 3.8 and seems stable. i ran game benchmarks (gta 4 cuz its sooooo demanding) and played tf2 for an hour with no problems. can someone help?

Don't go futher, you will damage your system with too much voltage, maybe try OCing your ram to double the fsb

my ram is overclocked by 41mhz (its normally at 800mhz) so its 841mhz. how is 1.32 too much volts, ive seen some guys use 1.4 volts for there vcore. its at 1.27 currently. the recommend highest volts to use its 1.36 ive read. is my ram limiting me from overclocking further? cuz wen i put up with higher fsb it just black screens. i have to power off and lower it for it to boot up.

heres a pic of cpuz if that helps. is my fsb limiting me? my mobo says it can support 1600 but if my pushing over 1600 will it not boot and black screen?

It could be that your board just won't boot past a 420 fsb.Try dropping your multiplier and see if it will boot beyond 420.Your ram could be the problem but it doesn't seem likely with such a mild oc.

The P5Q is a good motherboard for overclocking, but the P5QL is a terrible board.

ya i read its not a good board for overclocking (i knew i shoulda went with a i750). do you think its safe to push my ram farther? its "corsair gaming memory" lol. thats all it says on it.

ok i tried for 850mhz on my ram and it booted, but my internet stopped working. so i figured it was to high. wen i lowered it a little it returned to normal. im sitting at 845mhz. is it my ram that causes this black screen if i shoot for higher fsb? does my ram need more volts to work at a higher mhz? if i grabbed some ddr2 1066 ram would i beable to boot at higher fsb without black screening?

download prime95 and run the blend test (lots if ram tested) this will tell you if your ram is stable.
my ram is 800mhz and 5-5-5-15 with 1.8v
now i have it at 990mhz 5-5-5-18 with 1.9v

you should unlink your ram (leave it at 800mhz) until you have the cpu stable. that way you know the ram is not interfering with the cpu overclock.
but in this case it shouldn'd interfer too much as your cpu is at 420mhz.
so having your ram linked your ram is at 840mhz (as its ddr2, 420 x 2)

edit
just realised by reading your original post, and the above numbers, you have the ram linked.
UNLINK it (leave at 800mhz) and then try 430mhz fsb

It can take ALOT of time to OC RAM.

It will be easier to get DDR2 1066, but there's no telling what your board's FSB limitation is.
