i have a 160gb ps3 i bought on boxing day and i loved it till around now. i used to be addicted to it playing mw2 when i was younger but now i stopped playing. when i wanted to play a little now the psn down. just to tell u i believe they already fixed the promblem which has two theories

1. when portal 2 came out there was a link with ps3 and pc users. that link got hack.

2. anon, the group has many members and one of them might have did it without telling.

if u have more friends on xbox buy an xbox. currently htey are doing updates like a newer dashboard, probaly installing new firmware and making hack-proof.

i suggest 2nd gen slim its like $299,or search craiglist or kijiji.

Overall i love ps3 and if u love free psn buy it

Wait for the deals on Slims to come back..deal usually includes a $50 gift card to vendor you buy from..example would be Amazon selling a week ago or so for $300 + $50 credit for the 160 GB Slim.

The downfall of the PS3 aside from the network being down is that the first gen(PS2 backwards compatible) had severe solder joint issues. It's not a matter of if but when you would lose audio and/or video. Sometimes taking it apart and using a heatgun would fix it but usually not. Then you are stuck getting a 2nd gen slim anyway through Sony for 120 refurbed/150 new.

I'm starting to get sick of the flavor-of-the-week wannabe anarchist anti-corporation mentality. Too many people (who shall remain Anonymous ) think that refusing to let people do whatever they want is worthy of terrorism. Boycott (kinda like OPENbracket is suggesting) is an Ok way to express your opinion, but it should be up to the individual and not "hey, we're all gonna go hate on Sony because they dislike unauthorized use, wanna come?" Band-wagoning is the opposite of personal choice.

Companies only make good things if people pay for them and don't blatantly misuse them. Unfortunately that means people who mean no harm are limited in their options, in order to limit illegal stuff. I don't like it either, but I can't deny that Sony has few options.

And it's not like there wasn't a reason for the downtime, provided you believe it (and who claims to have been hacked when they weren't?):

To the OP...going to get a PS3 just for media server use? Might as well get it used...from a good home. Checked the For Sale area?

If you're thinking of gaming online, do not get a PS3.

Yeah, who admits to having let all of their paying customer's names, addresses, passwords, credit cards, and anything else they have ever put into the network unless it really happened.
