Buying a PS3... Need some help deciding which one to get - Page 3

The first gen PS3's are gems..built well, reliable as sin.
Mine was a 40GB, now a 320GB, and soon will be a 1TB when I can get a 2.5" 1TB without cutting off my arm.

Getting a ps3 doesnt always mean ur going on psn. So thats a null point. Get the slim for your media server. you will never look back.

I heart my fatty.

I got a big laugh at how sony downgraded the newer ps3 and M$ upgraded their newer version which should have been what the new one is from the start.

Band-wagoning is the opposite of personal choice.

Companies only make good things if people pay for them and don't blatantly misuse them. Unfortunately that means people who mean no harm are limited in their options, in order to limit illegal stuff. I don't like it either, but I can't deny that Sony has few options.

And it's not like there wasn't a reason for the downtime, provided you believe it (and who claims to have been hacked when they weren't?):
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/04...curity_breach/

To the OP...going to get a PS3 just for media server use? Might as well get it used...from a good home. Checked the For Sale area?
I am not supporting the PSN downtime at all, for it effects the the actual users. However I do disagree on Sony handled the whole jailbreak/homebrew situation that started in early September. Instead of trying to fix it, they targeted the developers with fear mongering tactics. These developers/hackers are simply attempting to restore otherOS capabilities on their ps3, which I see no harm in that. Sony started threatening developers to stop their work or else they will file a lawsuit on them. Sony's lawsuits are complete garbage and wont hold that well in court, but since Sony has deep pockets they can make scene developers go broke trying to fight these cases. The developers being sued (Geohot, Graf_C) do not support piracy.

Whether they support piracy or not, their efforts do enable it somewhat. Their goal may be harmless, but it requires something that compromises Sony's security completely, and not just for innocuous purposes.

The honor system does not work online...it's like giving all your friends (and their friends, and their friends' friends...) keys to your house and expecting them not to steal anything...someone is going to be the one to ruin it for everyone.

buy an xbox! trust me , even if ps3 has better hardware, xbox has better/same graphics because all games are made for xbox and afterwards the ps3 version is made.xbox can also be jailbroken to run burned games (if you dont want LIVE anymore)xbox has better online, 5 usb ports instead of 2(ps3 has only 2), wireless N instead of G (ps3 has only g) and you can play music while playing a game which the ps3 cannot do. cmon dont do the same mistake i did
this is coming from a ps3 owner.

Well the security compromise was bound to happen, for it happened with EVERY console ever made so far, however sony was the first (maybe second if you include apple with geohot) to go through extream measures of lawsuits and such. Other companies such as microsoft simply frequently updates their security to increase the difficulty.

Of coarse there will be people who will ruin a good thing for personal gain, there always is. However I don't believe that is a valid argument to state this security hole also allows piracy, for it was never attended to. Its similar to the net neutrality and limited internet access argument, with it illegal activity will decrease, sacrificing other features. Everything has it flaws.

Users like SC2pro fits your profile, however you can only hope not everyone is like that.

But...the PS3 has Blu-Ray, so games that required 3 DVDs on the 360 would need only one for the PS3 (Star Ocean, for example). And Blu-Ray is pretty awesome for movies too.

And for the cost of an XboX 360 wireless N adapter, you could also get a wireless N bridge for the PS3.
